At the 1/8 nationals we all had to wear safety vests when marshaling.
At my local track HCR someone was hit with a 1/8 buggy off a large triple mid race. Went out like a light. I was one of the first to get to him and started first aid. He was up after several minutes he was up and moving fine. Pretty scary though as he was an older guy.
All the local tracks don't allow anyone under 13ish to marshal for 4x4sc or 1/8.
Typically tracks should have one level lower turn marshal for the current race ex.
14 and under marshals for
2wd stock marshals for
2wd sportsman mod marshals for
2wd expert mod marshals for
4wd sportsman marshals for
4wd expert
I've only been hit twice really good. Once in the elbow by a 1/8 e buggy during warmup laps as I was walking out to my spot. And last night by a 4wd sc but that was pretty much my fault.
Eyes open, don't do anything to risky...Good to go imo

A marshals head put my 4x4 sc out of commision while up a lap and i hit the tripple as he ran in without looking to flip ove a truck i already lapped. Hit him right on the back of the head. A grown man who is deep into the hobby. I was out of the race because the impact damaged a wire. People make mistakes. Frustrating mistakes. A MAIN. Pay attention people. Look around.

Mind you this experience is only in bashing on a old rc car track next to a football oval. but 20-30 cars running all day 10-15 at a time and we get anywhere upto 20 kids running around on the track. none hit so far but the amount of times i crashed to avoid them is rediculous, and you can tell them a thousand times to get off the track and they just throw rocks at the cars or jump infront of them after jumps to annoy us. oneday.....i aint going to crash on purpose....just to miss them

During a practice I was picking up a buggy when another one started flipping at me. I caught it with both hands right in front of my face. It would have been lights out for me.

I know everyone has been talking about marshaling during a race, but if for some reason your running during practice, and someone is marshaling the track for their friend or kid....
PLEASE say "Thank You" if they take the time to flip your car. Apologize if you hit them, and don't expect them to walk across the entire length of the track to flip your car over.
I only say this because out of the 2-3 hours I turn-marshaled for a friend (newbie to the hobby); only ONE person thanked me.

I've been marshalling for a LONG time...and since my truck normally stays together, I marshall almost every race that I'm not in (we normally run 4-5 classes on a Sunday, and I am out there marshalling for 3-4 races, plus I am one of the few guys running around flipping cars during the warm-up laps)
I hurry to flip over cars when I can...but I wait for all the oncoming traffic to clear...It wasn't the other drivers fault that you ended on your lid, and it sure as heck isn't the marshall's fault that you flipped your truck either, so why should a marshall run into the middle of traffic, screw up everyone elses' lines and possibly cause them to crash too, when the marshall is doing you a favor by helping you to continue to race.
The only exception to this is when someone is upside down right in the middle of a landing zone...where they become an almost unavoidable obstacle.... that is the one time I will actually risk myself or the oncoming cars...
If you ever find yourself getting mad that a marshal takes too long to flip your car....LEARN TO DRIVE BETTER and you won't need a marshal's help....

The only time I have yelled at a marshal, I traction rolled in their corner while in 2nd place. I was sitting upside down 3' from them. They stood with their back to the corner watching their friend race. If I had not yelled(after waiting almost 10 seconds) they would not have seen me until their friend made it around to that corner.
Some of the tracks I raced at the announcer was good at not only calling the race but reminding marshals what to do. Saying a few times each race: Marshals remember watch your corner not the race. Marshals no cell phones, working on cars, sitting, or standing with hands in pockets.
Having good marshals is as much the race directors responsibility as it is the marshals themselves.

Just don't make tracks with jumps that put 1/8th scales at head level. Seems a lot easier than trying to train every corner marshal out there like most have suggested, just a quick thought.
