Default Most Accurate Motor and ESC Temp Reading?

Where is the most accurate place to measure the motor's temp? On the back plate of the can or on top? Is it most accurate to measure the top of the ESC on the heat sinks or on he sides of the ESC?

Noob question, but I was just wondering!

take it apart really fast and measure inside. OK, so maybe that's not practical.

The motor is usually hottest on the side of the can, and some escs have a way to check temps through a button sequence too.
