Go to harbor freight and get some 6" calipers. I picked some up for around 15 bucks on sale. They work great, I only wish they had a ball bearing slide and were a little smoother. But for 15 bucks you can't really complain.

Auto parts stores are another possibility. I picked up a cheap one for around $20 at an O-Reilly parts store. Not very smooth action either, but seems to be accurate and repeatable.

+1 on the Harbor Freight Caliper, have had mine for years and have only had to replace the battery.
