Either don't use the gear cover, or drill a hole in the gear cover...

DO NOT cut the motor shaft.

Always use the gear cover so drill a small hole in it. Although there is nothing wrong with cutting the shaft.

I'm curious why it's being suggested not to cut the shaft?

People will cut the shaft and all the little metal shavings get all over the place and possibly inside the motor. You need to put the motor in a bag, poke the shaft through the bag and cut the shaft with a dremel. Should be no issues doing it this way.

That plus the fact that it will be almost impossible to re-sell...

+1, just drill a hole in the cover. I have a T4 with a vxl setup and I just drilled a hole as well.

because it is alot easier to drill a hole in the cover, plus you may want to use the motor in something else later on that requires a longer shaft.
