Wow...so needless to say when we pin the layshaft that it puts MUCH MORE stress on the gears...thanks for sharing the pics . Sounds like if the FT version will have this, than AE should come out with an updated material for the idler gear.

No, not DESTRUCTION. But idler popped and that really sucks. Now i'm dead for three days.

EDIT: Btw, All my bearings are beautiful, and nothing's "wrong". It just can't handle the modification "and" tightening the slipper like we're so used to. Mod, then adjust the slipper like we "thought" we'd be doing out of the box 6 months ago. Gotta get away from the mindset we have to bottom out this thing on the slipper for power. Not anymore with the Pinned mod imho. There are "whole teeth" still splined with my Top shaft. It just tore through the idler. Especially with the 3-4 others who reported it the day after this mod was big news.

BUT! That pinned shaft mod is amazing idler explosion or not. 3s losi's, slashes... etc. I'm on their ass or holding them off with my 2S corners and all. I got through 4 packs before this happened though.

It's not that. It's 'us' treating the slipper pinned as unpinned.

I torque'd down the slipper like I would any other time and so the slipper wasn't "slipping" thus tearing the gears like like any truck would do. It was my fault. We have to understand when we do the mod, to treat the slipper as we "thought" we were going to when we got these trucks (before this whole decoupled mess)

I pinned ours too, my son tried it and didn't care for it. I tried it and liked it, but also took out the idler gear in the rear tranny? Not sure why, we have had our trucks for 5-6 months and they have been very reliable. Want to try the pin again but don't want to keep tossing idler gears!

I only have had my truck a week so take with a grain of salt but... I think when we loose the gear it is only because the slipper is not set correctly. I just turned on the nut and didn't check it, gone in just a few laps. Replaced, reset, no problems.

I got to say, unless My truck was built differently. I have had 0 issues with the slipper. I'm running a 6.5 Tekin 16P, stock spur with a 50c centre saddle for the entire season, and only replaced HD pads. NO SLIP I was waiting on the results of the pin mod, (glad I did) I think for now I'll leave the truck as is. Truck runs awesome, placing in the top 3.

I ordered the STRC o ring spring collars & just put them on...they are SO MUCH BETTER than the stock plastic collars...I always hated how easy they screwed onto the shock bodies, these collars have good resistance, I'm sure I won't have to check my ride height after every run...even though I probably will any way...it's r/c paranoia

If you start running 550 motors, the slipper problems show up.

The 540 motors don't have enough torque to cause the biasing problems. I would of not stopped running my 6.5 540 in my truck except in order to get it to be the same speed as the 550 (laptimes) I had to put a lot of gear in it and it would thermal in 5 minutes - with a fan! The 550 is easier to drive than the 540 was now that I pinned the belt cog.

I had a failure yesterday. One of my high zoot Jconcpets locknuts came off, giving me a "did you lose a tire" moment. It's serrated, I just didn't get it tight enough. And my truck has been getting louder and louder, so I assume it's the idler going bye bye.

I have the parts to build the brace. I'm going to build mine a little different in the back part of it (going to mount it to the shocktower) but it will be a few days because after watching Dan Wheldon die this afternoon (I never miss an indycar race) I just don't feel like being around anything racy.

I discovered tht the annodize was so worn out in the inside of my shocks that you could actually feel them catch through the stroke.
Purchase list:
Hard annodize shock bodies
TiNi shock shafts
RPM front&rear a-arms
2 hard anno aluminum idler gears

The freak, RCSHOX.com
( http://rcshox.com/shoxshop/catalog/p...ddf7bb8903e8f7) has some garolight slipper disc that work wonderfully well, and Mac the Knife makes a clutch basket that works very good as well- http://gearrings.weebly.com/rc-racing-stuff.html

Still trying to figure out why the pinned shaft is killing transmissions?

I've only got 1 race night on mine. I noticed the truck was sounding worse but I had no failure.

Since then, I've had the trans in and out a bunch, building w/o the idler or diff, trying it pinned and un-pinned, messing w/ the slipper...and so on.

Trying to isolate the noise, my idler looks good, but sound like a bad pinion/spur gear combo.

From the looks of everyone elses, it must be the idler. My bearings feel good.

I was running my slipper (stock w/ garolite pads), pretty tight. I was also driving it a little harder than normal.

I guess the shock applied through the slipper to the idler is just too much for it to take?

What's the solution?
