how to keep motor temps down on orion vortex brushless motor.

it is about 40 degrees during the day right now and my team orion motor is running about 155 degrees, so when it gets hotter it will also run alot hotter right? i dont really want to gear down that much, im already running 12/56 in 32p, so what will i have a problem when it gets hotter and if i were to get a tacon motor do those tend to run cooler than other brushless motors, i thought i herd that from somewhere.

anybody

It will be alot easier for guys to help you if you can provide your full setup.

what car are you running it in? what speed control are you using? How many cells are you running? etc...

i have a 60a ezrun esc and i am running 2s lipo in a stampede.

The kV rating of the motor?

sstumpf 03-14-2011 08:44 PM

it is 4000kv

You don't want to gear down? Don't. Run a fan. Buy a more powerful motor.
If it still gets hot, no one is forcing you to gear down. Ruin your motor if you want. You are simply going to have to face facts and adjust things when it's hot outside. You can't change the laws of physics.

ya that is why i want to know if the tacon runs cooler than a orion motor so i dont have to loose any speed. is there a fan that i can run on it that will fit in the stampede 2wd.

Run an aluminum tranny case I hear those help with temps on the Pedes and rustlers

Don't get the same kv motor in another brand. There wont be a significant change. Get the next step up in kv in any brand and gear it down. Your stampede will be faster than before, and since the more powerful motor isn't working as hard as the less powerful motor, it will run cooler.
If you can afford it, get a Castle Creations 4600kv 4 pole motor. It will run cooler and faster than your 4000kv.
If you cant afford that get a cheaper motor that is more than 4000kv, like the first generation Castle 4600kv 2 pole motor. (Yes, Castle makes two different 4600kv motors.) It is about $20-$25 cheaper than the 4 pole, and has been around a long time and is a good motor, just not as much torque (wheelie power) as the 4 pole. The 2 pole series are called CM36 motors and the 4 pole series are called 1406 motors. The Castle 4 pole motor will be amazing in your stampede. Save up for it.

The cheapest thing to do would be to try a fan. Any fan that says it will fit a 540 sized motor will fit a 540 sized motor. Look at the fans that are for sale online. You have to trim your engine shroud to get them to fit in your stampede, or mount it on the shroud with zip ties or something. Cut away the shroud right under the fan so that maximum air blows on the motor.

I suspect your next question is going to be for a link to the Castle motors and/or a price. Come on, don't you know how to do a search online?

Don't send him down yet another road. It's the motor. The motor you have isn't a good orion, it's an old sealed can that you have already cracked open, glued with epoxy and was probably designed for on road, if anything.

I actually would suggest a tacon in this case, something of a lower kv rating. Something around 3000kv or so. Also, check your gear mesh, make sure there is an ever so slight amount of play between the spur and pinon. Too tight and it will overheat anything.

ok ya i will probably go the tacon route. thanks
