I run the Ballistic 4.5 550 in my SCTE with the Xcelroin Speedo geared 16/40 and it runs great. No heat issues and it is fast. I know some need to gear lower to get temps down. I will try the 14mm rotor and see how it works. Might help as summer kicks in even though I don't have any issues now running indoor.

Don't believe everything you hear...Charlie and Bob both attended Cactus and I haven't heard this. Maybe I should start commenting on how may escs from other mfgs burnt up at Cactus.... Big races are always hard on equipment as top (and sponsored) drivers push their electronics way beyond the limits to win their events. If they burn up an esc or motor, their sponsor simply gives them a new, free one.
Mike Truhe won the 4x4 Short Course division at Cactus Classic using our equipment; so it is dependable enough to win.
Potential causes of serious ESC damage:
…poor soldering/cold solder joints
…defective battery cell, or pack
...exceeding esc's input voltage
…low "C"-rated pack
…over-gearing
…weak rotor (demagnetized)
…shorted motor coil
...reverse polarity
…loose connectors
...repeated crashes/vibration
...damaged esc capacitor/module
...water damage/corrosion
Generally, when an esc burns up, the assumption is that it is a defective controller; it is always tempting to blame the item that is melting down. However, many other problems in your over-all set up may create excessive current drawn through the esc causing this complete melt down. Continuing to run any electronic product after it has started showing signs of distress will generally completely destroy the item.
You will greatly lessen the potential damage to any esc by making sure that these potential problems do not occur.

Well, I ended up grabbing the Havoc Pro SC/550 5.5T combo for my Losi 4x4. Ive been happy with the 540 Havoc Pro SC 17.5T combo in my SC10, so hopefully I have the same luck with the 550 combo as well. I just cringe and get nervous when I spend as much for an ESC/Motor as I do for the entire race roller itself, LOL! I also picked up the "tuned" 14mm rotor for the 550 can for sh!ts n giggles...........what exactly will that do in terms of performance?

The Ballistic 550 4.5T with the 14mm rotor is a beast and has a lot of power . I havent really had heat issues like some people and I have ran all the way up too a 17t in my Hyper 10SC and have ran a 15 on a high bite indoor track on my SCTE .
The 14mm rotor makes the motor have more torque and loose a little RPM , it feels much stronger than the stock rotor and has a notchy feel like the bigger 1/8 motors .

I have a hv 5.5 and i really didnt like it. It felt way underpowered for what it was. then i put the 14mm tuning rotor and i think it made a huge difference. the more runs much cooler now and the torque was majorly increased. also switching to a MMP was a big improvement. I havent had good luck with Novak esc's, that's why i have switched over to all castle products now. but i look forward to putting the 5.5 back in for dirt season around here in a few weeks.

Probably going to be a bit before I can get the all the technical stuff measured. Please email me with what you're looking for.
I would say that the 2 teeth is roughly accurate. We had similar feeling when we started using these in the 8th scales last year.

Thanks

How many amps does the Novak 4.5 turn ballistic draw ? Trying to figure out the amount of C rating that is necessary to push that motor .
How many amps does the 4.5 draw with the 14 mm tuning rotor ?

Bob and Charlie are installing the 14mm tuning rotor in our 550s and doing new Kv measurements. When we get them, I will post them here.

so how long until we can order the ballistic with the 14mm rotor?
