Murfdogg 17.5 would be a good option

im very impressed with my LRP X12 motor. even unboosted its got ridiculous torque and good top speed. runs a little warmer than most, but im pulling it off around 140 after a full pack and its still pulling strong through the whole pack. running 28/72 in a T4.

Try a viper 17.5 from www.premierehobbies.com. Lots of guys say those motors are basically insane. With the $10 of coupon they have on their site, it would cost the same as any other new motor. I'm also really digging my trinity/epic D3 motor, though it's of the 13.5 variety

Myself and the locals seem to be attached to the Team epic D3/Fanton Ion3 (same motor) series.

I run a Ballistic and it is quick!

I've heard good things about the Orion and Trinity.

My LRP took a dump after a month. And even when it was running it wasn't that fast.

I run only Ballistic and they run great for me. My dad has a murfdog but prefers to run the Ballistic. The viper motors from what I have seen seem to run pretty good.

I also like the Ballistic cause it's a sealed can. The LRP had these vents that allowed some moist clay in there and it f'd it up. Brand new motor too.

Novak's customer svc is good too. With 30 deg of boost and 28/74 my truck was flying!

Every LRP X-12 I have ever had has run warmer than others I have run.. It's normal according to LRP.. But, the power was insane.. Orions are known for smoothness.. Very refined power delivery.. Not as much on the top speed.. But still very good.. Personally I like the Orion the best.. The Novak Ballistics i feel are a happy medium between the two.. Punchier than the Orion but not as smooth.. Some have had reliability issues on RCtech.. I personally havent .. Another plus to the Ballistic is.. A new stator can be had for less than $40 so making your 17.5 a 13.5 or 10.5 etc. is much cheaper than buying a new motor.. The only Viper 17.5 I have seen was kinda on the slow side.. No experience with it otherwise..

The Viper 17.5's are the most balanced motors I have run to date. Absolutely outstanding power band with insane rip, with and without boost.

I have one of the Novak Ballistic 1300+ "tuner" motors and it is very strong unboosted. Add some timing with a Mamba Max Pro and it is stupid fast,

Skip the junk MMP speedo and go with an LRP SXX StockSpec V2..

Your link is quite expensive.. I got my first Ballistic at the track / LHS for $92

Wow, I'm glad you were here to tell me my opinion is crap.

The link is just for information, not a suggestion to buy directly from Novak. You do realize that isn't a normal Ballistic, right? I paid less than $109 listed.

As for speed controls, I run LRP for everything else, but I grabbed a MMP on the cheap and it's been super solid, smooth and I like the versatility and adjustability. I didn't feel the need to spend the inflated price for the LRP since we don't normally run 17.5 class.
