Default Stripped set screw!! Please help...

Well, I ended up stripping one of the set screws that holds in the wheel hex pin on my rc8. I have been out of this hobby for quite some time...Why does AE tell you to put loctite on the set screws when they are almost impossible to get out?? I am using quality tools....I dont want to have to buy new hub carriers, cva, or wheel hex....What do I do???

can you use a punch to get the pin out?
you didn't use red locktite, did you???
what tools are you using?
try grinding it down a little bit and using a lighter/torch to loosen the screw

break out the drill and a small bit. Be very careful so you can retap the hole, use some new pin's and use CA. That way you can use the relese agent.

Get an old Allen wrench that's just slightly too big, heat up the set screw with a lighter, tap the Allen wrench in with a small hammer, and
it should come out. Or use an ez-out on it. You aren't using red loctite are you?

Yes these can be frustrating situations. If you have a cheap hex driver like an RTR freebee one put it in the rounded screw and fill the area with a hi quality fast setting super glue but let it overflow the edges. I have gotten several out this way. Otherwise you might have to drill it out and buy a new hex hub.

I am going to have the heat up the whole wheel hex with a lighter, because like I said the set screw is stuck in the end of the cva axle, which is inside the wheel hex. If I heat up the wheel hex, wont it mess up the anodizing? What about the wheel bearing as it is quite close to the wheel hex? Will the heat effect it?

just see if you can stick the tip of a soldering iron into the setscrew head and cook off the loctite. then remove.

If you must drill, try and find a set of Left hand drill bits.

They spin backwards and usually grab and pull the screw out while drilling.

Try heat, punching pin, and forcing a bigger allen into the setscrew first.

BE aware...LH drills are not cheap....but they are priceless

I've had decent luck CA'ing in a new L wrench and getting these out. Easy to tray and usually costs nothing but a little time.

I think what I am going to do... is to heat up the wheel hex with at small torch, so that I can burn away the locktite...let it cool, then I will try and Ca a cheap L wrench in there...let it dry..Hopefully the heat will break the Locktite bond, and the ca will have enough strength to hold the set screw....
I would try to get the pin out..but I have no idea what tool to use for that.....

A chisel tip would be too large but a pencil point tip would work but also would transfer less heat quickly.
