Default shocks

how in the heck does the shock rebound?

I just don't get how it works

how does the piston get forced back down in the body without the spring?

The extra volume created by the shock shaft displacing oil in the body as it slides up causes some pressure build up inside which forces the shaft back out.

Which is why you have to screw the shock cap on while the shock is compressed*. Air compresses, liquids don't. My Old Man made that mistake once and ended up with a shock that he could put his full weight on and not budge, might as well have filled it with concrete instead of shock oil

* With the exception of bleedable shock caps

Its actually the air in the shock bladder compressing, the shock oil as a liquid cannot be compressed. A good example, build a shock with zero rebound(Fill with oil, bleed out the air, push the shock shaft all the way up put the bladder on and screw the cap on). The shock shaft will now rebound around 30-50%, but pull the shock shaft the rest of the way out and the vacuum pulls it back in.
