Default HELP! ESC Goes Thermal

I have a Hyper 8.5 w/ a Novak HV Pro ESC and 6.5 Brushless motor. The problem is my esc's thermal protection shuts down the esc after about 6 minutes of run time. I use the 11t pinion that came with the Novak conversion kit for this buggy. The motor and batteries generates very little heat..but you could cook an egg on the esc.

Also..the esc will get very hot after about 2 minutes run time without even running it hard. My gear mesh is fine and there is no binding. I have no fan..but I dont' think that will bring the temps down that much. The only other thing I know to do is drop the pinion teeth, which are $10 each! Am I forgetting to check something.

Here's my setup:
  • HV Pro Brushless System 6.5T with 5mm Rotor
  • 11 t pinion
  • dual 20c 5000mah Lipo packs

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Put a fan on your esc, most 1/8 esc needs a fan.

20C may not be enough for that setup. Sometimes that can generate heat.

Using the fan is absolutely crucial; this is why we provide the fan with the esc!
