Can't remove pinion gear
 

Hey guys,

My pinion gear seems to be stuck on my motor shaft, and I can't get it off.

I've tried heating it first with a soldering iron, but it still won't budge.

Does anyone have any ideas that I could try?

happend to me too... first make sure the screw is 100% out then what I do is just take a pliers and get under the pinion and kinda use it as a lever to get it off:sweat:

Yes the grub screw is out. There doesn't appear to be any corrosion, I did use red threadlock on the shaft to keep the pinion in place, and it seems to be proving more of a problem to remove than I thought...

pliers would be your best bet, just yank that thing off, if you damage the pinion, no big deal, they arent expensive!!!

I'm more worried about moving the shaft too much and causing damage to the motor!

Had that happen before- does the pinion spin on the shaft at all?

Hmm thats a problem. Red lock tite needs to be heated, which isnt good and you cant really pry that hard on the end bell.....that sucks.

I did the prying on the against the motor. I knew it was not a good idea but I had no other choice. The motor is fine.

Try the heat again (soldering iron), it may take a good 20 to 30 seconds of heat to get the loctite to break down. Try to pull while it is still hot.
Did the pinion go on the shaft easy? If you used any force to push the pinion on it may be more than the loctite holding it on. May require carefull cutting to remove.

Blue Loctite is a better choice for our RC hobby.

I had a prob once where the set screw created a burr on the shaft. It would spin free until I tried to pull it off the end, then it would stick. I put a few drop of oil on the gear and had a buddy spool the motor while I grabbed the gear with a vice grips, then pulled it off the shaft..

I usually use blue loctite but it was coming loose due to the vibration of metal-on-metal gears, and 6s power.

I've held the soldering iron on the pinion/shaft for over 3 minutes, till it was burning hot, but still haven't managed to get it off.

Also tried WD-40, and some light motor oil but to no avail :cry:

There is your first and only problem . Why would you use thread lock on a pinion ? Just need to make sure you tighten the set screw , if kept coming loose then time for a new set screw .

Well, I just managed to get it off.

Took a lot of brute force!

Didn't know, I do use loctite on my pinions on 1/8th scale as if I don't they tend to vibrate off, but I use blue not red, red is for stuff you really don't want to come off for a long time, blue not so much.
