Default Air esc in 1/8 e-buggy mechanical brake setup

Like title says, i'm curious as to if perhaps an airplane or helicopter esc would work in my 1/8 buggy with mechanical brakes. Since the only thing I need the neu motor to do is go forwards, theoretically speaking shouldn't i be able to use a air esc in my buggy? The only problem I forsee is maybe the cogging & calibration of esc. Can anyone shed some light on this?

You shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. Just make sure you have the right amp specs.

cogging for sure. For 1/8 i would just make sure the air esc can handle 6s lipo and minimum 160 amps continuous.

sounds like a bad idea to me. im sure the esc would be fine with the constant amps (think some helli's and airplanes might draw more amps constant) but 1/8 scale electric draw some serious peak amps during acceleration........i just dont think they would put up with it but i could be wrong.

I have use a hobbywing air esc before 100amps. Just put a fan n u will be fine. Mine ran about 20mins n was abt 45 degree.

It's not smooth as it's sensorless n it's big. I have since switch to a 1/8 car series smoother n no clogging.

Thanks for the input guys... reason I ask is I am having my monster stuff repaired & also ordering an xerun system as a backup but right now I have a 120a air esc laying around that I want to try. Will report back- i'm going to go ahead and try it.

sooo like i said the "constant" amp rating would be fine sooo what does that have to do with peak amp draw?

i just didn't know if the esc's peak amp rating would be enough. it just seemed like an 1/8 scales acceleration was more violent than a airplanes that's all and that just because your esc can handle the constant amp draw doesn't mean it can necessarily handle the peak draw.
but sounds like a few have tried it and it was ok

there are alot of problems with running an air esc, the most important being that
air esc's run a different throttle setting, which you should be ok with if you run a computer radio, it all depends on what it takes to arm the esc, otherwise your going to find you need to rubber band your trigger at full brake.

Second alot of the fets they use in plane escs are not designed to wipe heat like car and boat escs, making them a little more fragile, all depending on the esc of course.

Yeah,my only concern would be the durability...They can handle up to 12s so that should not be a problem..But even when I push my planes doing 3d they can get warm..I would say dont do it because of the impact, thats my only concern..

most electronic components, in my experience, have similar peak ratings given a similar constant rating. only problem in this case would be heat dissipation under burst loads IMO.
