Default battery charging ?

i have a hot bodies micro charger. and 7-cell nimh batteries. on the charger theres a 1,2,4 amp. i want to know if i charge my batteries on 4 amps every time, will it shorten the life of the battery? or should i stay on 1 or 2 amp?

stick under 1c charge rate for your packs.
a 4000 mah battery will handle 4 amps no problem and give more punch on in the car than if cahged on 2 or 1 amp ... but not last as long , runntime and pack life.

if your using the pack from traxxas ... charge at 2 , they get pretty hot on 4 amps

you mean charging your battery at higher amps give them more power in the car? well i got a traxxas 8.4v 3000mah, so i can do 2 amps..... and a venom 8.4v 5000mah. and a trinity 8.4v 4600mah. charge them to at 2 or 4 amps?

This is what electric racers would do - charging at highest possible rates makes pack faster. But it shortens pack life and after several races, packs that were charged at high rates wouldn't be good for anything except average practice packs.

I don't see any harm in charging a 4000mah pack at 4amps unless they get too hot. If they're getting too hot to hold, then they're too hot. They should be hot when they peak 120-125F, and you can hold them at that temp. When they start getting to 135F, they're getting too hot.

true, but if charging at 4 amps really shortens the battery, i don't think i should do it. im charging them at 2 amps now. i mean if it would take like 100 charges at 4 amps to really effect the battery, i would do it. im not sure how much it shortens the battery and how fast?

I race a Traxxas Slash and use the Traxxas series 4 7 cell battery. I race on Saturdays, so Friday night I charge my batteries at 2 amps. Then when I get to the track, just before a race, I peak the battery at 5 amps. Only takes a few minutes to peak them so they don't get hot and seems to give them a little bit more kick for racing.

I run twin 7cell pacs in an Emaxx, I have two pair, 4000mah and 4400mah. When I bought the Emaxx used I got the 4000mah set and I added the 4400mah pair later. I know the 4000mah are old, guy that I got it from said when he bought Emaxx used, they came with it. Have no idea how old they are or how many charges, they're at least 7 or 8 yrs old. My pair is 3yrs old.

I charge them at 4a and after a short breakin on the 4400mah, charge them at 4.4a. Both sets are going strong with no hint of let down. I've run the 4400s over 100 times and the 4000s have been run a lot, lot more than that.

I've never seen proof that charging at charge rates where the cells are not being overheated shortens pack life. If your cells are not very good, thats another issue altogether.

wow! thats pretty impressive. maybe i will charge my packs at 4 amps then. i mean they get warm, but not hot. im guessing my cells are good. i got a traxxas 300mah, venom 5000mah and a trinity 4600mah all 7-cell. the traxxas has probably 15 runs the venom 10-12 runs and the trinity i bought used. just got it today.

The venom packs have less than a great rep. Venom has always had a prob getting their NiMh packs to customers while they were fresh. Some get lucky anmd get fresh packs, and some don't. The old packs - some recover, some don't.

Venom packs are made with generic chinese cells and you will have a cell fail in the pack before its over. In my mind thats your weakest pack. The Trinity is potentially your best pac if its not been mistreated, they use good cells. I don't know where Traxxas has their pacs made. I got a Traxxas stick pack with the Mini Erevo I bought used and its not a bad pack.

Not really - you can buy the same charger they sell for 1/2 or less, its the way they do business. Venom is just a re-seller - they buy stuff as cheap as poss, put a Venom sticker on it and double the price (or better).

It's their business model.
