Default MP9e, worth the price?

So I have a Kyosho RT5, and am absolutely in love with it. Its a fantastic racer, and everyone is very impressed with it at the club I race with. So much so that they are thinking of getting their own.

Anyways, I have been thinking about getting in to an Electric 1/8th, and naturally I was drawn to the Kyosho MP9e due to my positive experience with the RT5. After seeing the price I was a bit shocked, but still interested. However, after looking at the prices of some of the others like the VE8, Eight E, Hyper 9e, what are you getting in the MP9e that isn't in the others? What justifies a price of $830 over a VE8 or Hypers $300? I am happy to pay for it if it is justified by what you get, but that is a huge difference.

On a second note, the MP9e is $830, while the nitro version is only $580. You can get a conversion for $120 and still end up ahead. You can even get the TKI kit plus a conversion kit and end up at $890 which you can easily make back by selling extra parts. What am I missing, is there any reason to get the MP9e vs buying the nitro kit and converting?

Thanks for the input guys!

I honestly dont know why they are so expensive. Its going to perform any better than a $300 buggy though.

Mainly name, and quality. Kyosho has always been a bit more expensive than others, however their 8th scale stuff is top notch. The 777 has a ton of titles and this one is built off of that. As far as getting the Nitro and converting it, remember it IS a nitro car with some electric specific items such as body and a few others, so if its cheaper to convert it, then do that.

You can compare the parts there.

If you want to go with the mp9, go with the nitro kit and then add the conversion kit. If I'm not mistaken, the conversion kit's motor mount is better than the mp9e (cast vs. aluminum). Another way to go is the Inferno VE. The Orion electronics are actually really good...I've run them in my converted MP777WC and they are fast and smooth. The VE is the smart buy, the electronics in it alone are $300 by themselves. You could upgrade the VE into a MP777 also...which would practically change the whole car. If you can find a used MP777 that would probably be the cheapest and still very competitive way to go.

The VE would need upgrades out of the box. Big bore shocks, front and rear shock towers, and possibly the chassis too. I believe the diffs have 2 spider gears vs 4 also.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy to spend the ~$800 if it gets me a top quality buggy. I just want to make sure that for $800 I am getting the best, not just the most expensive.

Kyosho makes great quality buggies but nothing justifies an $800 price tag. The Mp9 is no better a platform than any of the other premium buggies out there that are all $200-$400 less expensive. Because of Kyosho's cost, parts are harder and harder to find conveniently too.

Exactly. Is it a good buggy? Probably...

Is it worth $800? Probably not...

Is it really that much better then anything else. Not even close...

Do you have a local hobby shop with the parts on the shelf?

That is now one of my big deciders when I buy a car. I was really leaning towards a Associated RC8 because I have 2 places within 5 miles for those parts, but I was reluctant to spend $500 on a chassis. This had me looking for a used one. The ones I did find in my price range were pretty beat up. I ended up getting an SH Z-Car chassis. Hobby People is still carrying the parts and I got the new Pro Kit for just $199. I am sure it is not quite the quality of the Kyosho, but it does handle great and it has to be the most durable chassis I have ever owned. At my budget and skill level, I don't think I culd do any better. It only cost me about $50 for the motor mount and a home built battery tray. The ESC and motor is the same no matter what you drive, figure $300 give or take there. I went budget on that too with a Mamba Max and an OEM Neu 1512 for just $250.

At my local track, I have taken one TQ, and have been beaten by a Hyper 9e, an HB Ve8, and a converted Losi 8ight. Our lap times are within 1 sec. The Losi driver is flat out better than me, and his car is a rocket with far more power than I have, but I could not drive it with that much grunt. My setup is enough torque to keep you on your toes without being a hair trigger. The top 4 electric guys are all past the traction limit over most of the track. It all comes down to grip in the turns (tires and setup) and the driver's ability to keep it on line. Runing alone I turn great laps, but I tend to choke a bit when I get in traffic. This is how I TQ'd but only got 2nd in the main. Dropped to third for a lap, but got it back. We did have a Kyosho 777 electric show up, but the driver did not show it's potential, we lapped that car about 4 times in 10 minutes.

Some people don't like the mp9 because of the price the tki kit is worth the price you are getting velvet coated shocks all the kickup, toe, anti squat is adjustable which saves you 100-150 instead of having to buy aftermarket adjustable plates it also has Cnc front steering knuckles you also get AKA tires with the tki kit and it has the smoothest and most free spinning drive train you will ever find on a buggy

Hi, I am now hesitating before making this MP9 purchase

I want to know if the MP9e comes RTR? For 839.99 I thought It would...

if not what comes with the MP9e that does not come with the MP9?

does the MP9 come rtr? if so is it better to buy mp9 and sell engine etc.. and make up the electronics?

if the MP9 & MP9e are only kits 839.99 + Tekin 1/8 = 329.99 + servo 100$ + receiver 100 = REALLY?

Yes the MP9e is pretty much just a roller with no electronics. The hardest part about getting into 1/8 is the cost of a good complete car.

I'll make it easy for ya. I'll sell you my TKI roller with a ton of spares and brand new Kyosho chassis (un-mounted) for $400.00 shipped.

Buy a conversion an MP9e body and your way ahead with spares to boot
