Questions?? New to electric, HELP!

Hey everyone, i'm thinking about getting back into the hobby. But I could use some help because i want to go electric this time, and a smaller scale. I used to run 8th scale nitro but now i'm looking into 12th scale or smaller.

I like the mini e-revo because its rtr and pretty quick with just the traxxas nimh packs and all for a good price.. but i dont like how small the truck is and the fact that it would need some more money in upgrades(shocks, wheels/tires, etc.) to get it where i'd like it to be. I also just dont really like the way traxxas makes trucks really complicated with lots of parts that can break.

The other truck i looked at was the hyper mini ste. love the design of the truck and the price for an electric converted roller is great. Plus, i would run this truck stock unlike the revo that id have to upgrade.

The problem is that i dont know anything about motors, ecs's, bats so im not sure what i would need. I have looked at 2 different options:

the traxxas vxl system from their 10th scale trucks and just run it with the stock traxxas nimh batteries.

or the castle sidewinder 10th scale system(5700kv) with some decent nimh packs.

I want to avoid lipo batteries because of the cost and having to get a new charger and having to worry about balancing them(dont even know what that means lol) and i really dont need or want a super fast truck, im not racing.

so if you have any suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated especially if you can suggest some other possible motor/esc/bat options that would suit my needs. thanks

I don't know run smaller scale but as far as you mentioned, i would go with the castle products. The Mamba pro would be best for 10th scale and a compatible motor. I would also stick with 10th scale because of the popularity and availability of products. I know you don't want lipo but it's the only way to go now. You can find good chargers for a fair price and they are a lot less work than nimh's. Balancing liops is not difficult as many chargers now come equipped with balancers and you only need to balance them every other charge or so. Plus the cost of lipo's have significantly gone down and there are plenty of reputable companies out there. Once you learn more about lipos they are not as complicated as they seem. Plus you can store them at half or just above half charge and are fine for awhile. As with nimhs it requires more maintenance with them.
