$800 to spend

I want a really good 1/8 or 1/5 4X4 electric buggy. Something that looks like a dbx ve or a vorza flux. I've only been in this for about three weeks and love it! i'm giving my son my dbx ve and want something sick for myself. What should i get? Thanks in advance!

Can't speak for 1/5 as i've never owned or driven one.

$800 for 1/8 is about right with everything minus the radio/rx.

Find out what kind of parts/setup support you can get in your area for 1/8. You don't want to be the only one at your track running that car.

Losi, Hot Bodies, Associated, OFNA, Caster, etc.

they're all great cars that can win, just make sure you can get parts support when things go wrong

Then figure out whether you want to go sensored-Tekin or unsensored-Castle.

Lower kv motor & 5S or 6S seem to be way most people are going these days.

Budget for wheels/tires as well.

what is a sensored - tekin and unsensored castle?

I've heard that the hpi 1/5 Baja 5B is about the best you can get. However, these beasts need a lot of track/land to operate. You may have more options with the "smaller" 1/8. These things are incredibly fast and fun. I have a Losi 8ight and an HPI Ve8. The Losi is very high quality and I have had a blast with it. I just finished putting together the Ve8 and haven't tried it out yet.

If you are looking for a Vorza RTR, you can get the HPI Vorza or Kyosho Inferno VE. I don't know how good the electronics are for the RTR's though. Make sure your LHS carries parts for what you decide to buy.

Other good buggies are the Associated RC8 and the OFNA Hyper 9e. For those, you will have to assemble a kit and buy the electronics. If you go that route I would recommend Tekin RX8 or the Castle MMM systems.

ESCs for 1/8 scale:
Tekin- sensored ESC (RX8)
Castle- unsensored ESC (Mamba Monster Max)

whether the speed control uses a sensor or not

Nice thing about 1/8 buggies, you can run on indoor, 1/10, 1/8, outdoor tracks. A lot of flexibility. You can also run with nitros too!

sorry to ask, but what is sensored and what is not? which has the advantage? remember i've only been doing this 3 weeks, thanks!

A Sensored motor is just smoother. It doesnt cog or studder at low RPM's.

I don't know the electronical differences between the two, but from what I know sensored is more of a smoother powerband. Sensorless has more of a torque powerband.

$800.00 will buy a decent KIT and electronics, then you need to add radio and receiver, servo, batteries, a good charger and power suply...

Neu_Racer 01-21-2010 07:59 PM

Quick rough estimate on breakdown:

1/8e Buggy
HB Ve8 - $300
Tekin RX8 - $300
XP 1015 servo (.11 transit 201oz torque, more than enough) $100
Airtronics MX Sport 2.4Ghz radio $100

We are already at $800 and you have no batteries or charger
This is also a great point of debate. Do you go with the Hyperion/Maxamps/Reedy packs at $100-$250 EACH or the HobbyCity packs at $40-$60 each + shipping?
Then do we get the Hyperion Duo/Checkpoint/Venom Pro for $100-$300 or the Turnigy Accuel for $35 and a power supply for $15?

I run a Duo with the HK batteries and do just fine.

But either way you are at your $800 budget and are spending a minimum $200 more for batts/charger and all the way up to $700-$800 additional depending on how crazy you want to go.

Now of course you can buy used rollers, preowned brushless setups, etc. Or even find people selling JR 9100 servos on here NIB for $80-$100 and piece it together over time for less but its still very expensive.

For 1/5 you are looking about an additional $300+ just to get going. You need better servos, higher cell count batteries, conversion kits, etc. And I have never seen an indoor track that allows 1/5 scales and surely not to race! Imagine cornering those!

Good luck with whatever you choose though and have fun! 1/8e is a blast. Sadly I am selling mine.

You can get the vorza and upgrade the radio to 2.4G the accucel charger and 2 450 Turnigy packs and be Golden. Or you could go with the Caster sport roller $200 on sale right now. A Tekin or MMM set up $279 A decent servo $70, 4 5200mah 30C Turnigy 2s packs $150 and the Accucel charger agian with $15 power supply. And Hobbypeople has the airtronics MX sport 2.4 radio on sale for $79. The Lipo's you can start with 2 which is what you need to getthe car going for Like $60-75 and be right in your buget with a great platform. Or you could get the Ve8 another awesome car I have 1 and a Caster awesome 2, from Stormer for $269 right now and the rest you know. These are the best choices with your buget and looking around and finding a deal on something here and there can happen, look at the FS thread.

Just got a look at these Buggies, if you are just getting started this should be an option to look at.
