Default LiFe packs for 8th scale use

I run lipo's in my 10th stuff and will be moving to 8th electric. I know most people have run lipo's 4-6s. Who out there has run these in 8th? it seems like a much safer way to go in this application, any comments?

Some people do run the A123 packs in their 1/8th scale cars. Turnigy now has LiFe packs available as well for a fraction of the price. If you will be racing 10 minutes or under, LiFe will probably work just fine. They are heavier, but 1/8ths are heavy enough that it doesn't make a huge difference. My personal opinion would be to run a minimum of a 4S LiFe pack in a 1/8th. 3S lipos work for indoor 1/8th, but 3S life packs are quite a bit less voltage.

You will also find that due to the lower voltage, your gearing in comparison to what others are doing with standard lipos will be slightly different. (probably tooth or 2 bigger pinion).

When they get some packs I could use sure I would try them out I like the fact you can run them till the car wont move. I would go from 4S lipo to 5s life probably though and go less mah like 5000 lipo to maybe 4500 life and hope for similar runtime, about weight as long as they aint way more than lipo I will try them. I was thinking about it when I saw the Turnigy packs came out. I would like to be able to use them in both my cars but will only fit in the Caster.

the big thing is the charge time if your charger can handle it, they normaly can charge at 5c, which means you can charge a 5000 at 25 amps if you can ever find a charger to do it.

I was going to run a 3s on one side and a 2s on the otherside of the caster, that way I can weight the 2s to make the car perfect on center.

I bought two of the Turnigy 4500mah 2s packs and have run them in my Ve8. They work well, but you can really feel the wieght difference between them and lipo. I got them for practice because of the fast charge rates. I still need to get bigger pinions for these to make them as fast as the lipo setup, but what I have tried they are good. Decent power and good run times.

Thanks for the info so far I am glad I asked because I only thought max amps had them. As for size do they fit most 8th trays RC8,2.0,D8 Ve8 I know that size can be a problem. I see that they also have a 6s pack which is what I am thinking of running (1700kv motor) but you brought up the weight issue do you know approx. weight differences between comparable packs?

I looked at the weights on hobby city and max amps and it seems like the LiFe cells are a few grams lighter (soft case) for example LiFe 6s 920g, LiPo 6s 950g. At what battery weight does the balance of the car start to become a issue?

as far as the 6s LiFe pack goes it is huge and about 900 grams, a comparable 6s lipo is about 660 grams, and the 6s LiFe batt is like 75 mm wide, not sure if there are many if any battery trays that would fit that beast. I run 2x 2s LiFe packs in the Ve8 set up as 4s, they fit just right, if I were to run this as a race setup I would probably go to a 2650kv motor due to the lower voltage of the packs. On the 2200kv I run they last about 9-10 minutes, but like I said didnt have the right pinion to gear up, so not sure if that will add a little time or not, and I have not had enough track time with them to say how much different the speeds are compared to other electric buggies, and the 2s LiFe packs are about 40 grams each heavier than a comparable lipo, but that would be a soft pack lipo. IMHO if you are looking to do a 6s setup, stick with lipo, 6s you will not need a 4500mah pack to run 15+ minutes and they dont make many choises right now for the LiFe packs, maybe Maxamps does, but for the price, I would just go lipo for 6s.

What pinion you running with the life packs the 2200 in the ve8? Is it much slower than the lipo your running? I thought I saw they were too long for the ve8 tray, I must have been mistaken lol.

I am running a 19 tooth, I have a 20 on order and once I can find/look for a 21, 22, and 23 tooth pinions I will try them out, just will be the end of January up here in Minnesota to get any track time with it again. So I will let you know once I get back on a track.

Yeah I figured more than a 19 would be needed thats what I run on 4S. probably 21 to get the same speed, I wonder what runtime you will get after you get it running as fast as your lipo set up.

I would say if you guys are going to compare life to lipo you have to do it 4s lipo to 5s life, and 5s lipo to 6s life, the voltage on a life is 3.3 per cell so its only 9.9v for a 3s compared to a lipo's 11.1 for a 3s and a 6s life is is 19.8 compared to a 5s lipo which is 18.5

Thats what I would want 5S, maybe a 2s and a 3s pack till someone makes a suitable 5s pack. But for $50 4s and go up 2-3 teeth why not. Plus with 5S the 4500's would give better runtime than 4S lipo 5000. I been watching them for a while and when the tech gets there size and weight wise they will probably take over. Unless lipo gets better tech too. I just looked and the 3s packs wont fit scrap that thought.

I couldnt agree more interplanet, only problem for my vehicle choise it is hard enough to find a lipo to fit let alone a LiFe pack in 5s, I have not checked what maxamps has availible, for the price I decided to try the turnigy, to see what these packs could handle, now I need track time with them
