I noticed something with my Slash 12t motor!
 
I was taking apart a motor just to get a idea whats inside. I took the metal sleeve off. I noticed it wanted to stick together due to the magnets. So i hook the motor up to a bettery. With the sleeve on i noticed the rpms were pretty most factory. Then when i removed the sleeve, the rpms jump way up! Is this a good thing for the motor and is this sleeve design for something else besides protection or looks?:sneaky:

i think the sleeve on the motor just gives it more torque i not sure though.
good trick though if that gives u more rpm!

I don't know what the rpm difference is. but take a nascar stock car which has a rumble sound to it(OK that's with sleeve on) then a take a indycar which has a high pitch screaming sound to it.(with sleeve off) That's the only way i can think of to describe the sound difference.:lol:

does it sound like it will blow up lol,i think though once u put it back on the motor mount and mesh. the gears up i think the rpm will equal out.

put it back together and try it out!! worst thing you can do is break a 20$ traxxas motor

the sleeve acts as a flux collector. It helps redirect the magnetic field of the magnets back to the arm and gives the motor more torque. With out the sleeve the motor will pick up on rpms because there is less of a magnetic pull on the arm that would pull the arm back into the field when the arm is trying to move away from it. However with out the added torque the truck would move at a slower speed. After all it is the torque that moves the truck.

Please understand that this is a simple explanation. There are other things that come into play that I have not mentioned so to not confuse anybody.

lol. I don't claim to know everything about an electric motor, but I do have some knowledge about how they work and what effects will and will not work. I have raced electric for 18 years and remember the black art of motor tuning.
If you have a question I will try and answer it to the best of my ability. All tho with the on-set of brushless, most of my knowledge is useless now. but It may give you a better understanding about electric motors.

Many motors used to come with extra steel laminations to increase the magnetic field. I imagine the motor would work, but it may overheat and not be as fast. Then again it could be the hot new trick everyone needs! I would try it, as mentioned before you will only be out a $20 stock motor if it cooks.

For break in, Ill start by saying everyone hass their own tricks and theirs is the only one thats right. Everyone else is just wasting time or ruining the motor. So listen to what I say and what everyone else says and judge for yourself.
I like to hook up the motor to a half charged 4-cell nimh pack. Put it in front of a fan. Lubricate the bushings and run it for about 10-15 minutes. Clean the motor VERY GOOD with motor spray, allow to dry, lube the bushings and you are ready to go. Keep an eye on the temp the entire time and let it rest if it starts to get too warm.
Like I said everyones break in is different and mine may not be the best, but it always worked for me.

Im going to try it. This motor is cogging off and on. I did the water breaking and forgot to lube it quickly afterwards so i will see what happens.

thay have motors like that on rc jets thy are called inline motors ! because a plane dont need th torq it needs rpms

This thread is about a slash 12t motor so I will assume that that is the motor you are asking about. this method will work with any closed end bell motor( slash, blitz, sc10, strike).

A: the first thing you will want to do is try and bend the brush holder in a small arch to put more pressure on the brush. it will look something like this. ( O) ). the circle would be the comm. and the line would be the brush holder/spring. this will put more pressure on the comm. and help hold the brush in place.

B: using brasso or any kind of brass polish, put 5 drops on both ends of the motor on the bushings. use a 4 cell pack to spin the motor. this will polish the bushings and shaft on the motor so that it will spin freely with very little friction. DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF OIL. the oil will adhere to the bushing first and will not allow the polish to do its job. this will only work with a motor that has not been ran because of the design of the oillight bushings. run the motor until the polish is dark black. Repeat 3 times. then put oil on the bushings.

C: using water, sub-merge the motor in water and run with a 4-cell pack. this will break in the brushes and keep the motor cool. the water will also put a small load on the motor to aid in break-in. I do this for about 30 min. I will also change the water every 5-10 min. doing this will help flush the motor out.

D: flood the motor with motor spray to get all of the water out of the motor. oil the bushing when the motor is dry. Mount the motor in the truck and drive for one pack on the road or parking lot. do not drive in grass just yet. you want to finish seating the brushes without a lot of load. the grass will create to much drag and heat up the motor.

When finished, you can run your truck silly. just keep an eye on the motor temp. Heat is the worse enemy of the magnets.

REMEMBER: these motors run best just before they blow up.

i took the sleeve off the motor and stuck it and and the traxxas esc in a J82 for my GF to run about a year ago and on a 7-cell pack geared 23/87 and that thing was ALOT faster than i expected it to be, it would easily lift the front wheels and prolly topped out about 30mph... and ran a ton of packs through it too and never did get very hot or burn up.
