Yep mostly just trophies, or just bragging rights.in 20 yrs I maybe have been to 3-4 races with cash payouts.

More and more tracks are having big event races twice a year with Trophys and sometimes cash payouts. Heading out to a Trophy race this Sat.
Usually for a payout style race, they increase cost per class $10-20 over the normal fee, and the more racers in each class the more $ for 1st,2nd,3rd. Payout races kinda suck though. Everyone gets a bad attitude and starts acting like a donkey congressman. Scratch that.......payout races blow chunks completley. Cash payout races make no sense, if I wanted to make money I'd nail my Xray 808, Sc10 and B44 to a board and shoot them for target practice, take all my tools, btterys, chargers, etc., and throw them in the lake. That would be about the same as winning $2000 in payouts every year.:weird: Trophy races are nice though. They attact a larger crowd, no moneys involved and they often cost the same as a club race. More laid back atmosphere. $15-20 for your first class, and $10 for each class extra you choose to run. When a track gets rebuilt and a new season begins, seems to be the time when trophy races occur. They schedule the big races while the track is still nice and fresh. Weird pattern I'm noticing that Trophy races go smoother and are more fun than races involving prizes/payouts. |

my local track dumped the cash payouts. Too much complaining about whether cars met the rules, cheating and an all around it put the FU in FUN. I started racing at the track after they dumped the cash prizes but everyone said it is a lot more fun and the atmosphere is better. They thought about having trophy's at the end of the year but most people thought it was just be a waste of money.

At my local track, the track owner gives out gift certs. for the 1st, 2nd, and some time 3rd place winners for each class, depeneding on how big the class is. It's $10 per class, and the prizes are $15, $10, and $5. Makes things lots of fun, plus you just go right back into the shop and spend more money anyway.

You may typically only find "cash races" in 1/8 scale classes, let's start with that. If you have a local track in your area - call them to ask what's up in terms of payouts. Most events are just club-races - go race and have fun. Sometimes, tracks will have trophy races and occasional awards races for $$ for some classes (but not all tracks do this).
Are these guys cash-payout racing? http://www.rcprosites.com/ |
I would say most tracks race club racing for bragging rights. Some tracks with onsite hobby shops will give out "race bucks" for top three assuming the class had 6 or more which is basically a store credit to get parts. Usually helps with the tire bill if you are good enough to win.
I agree that when there is cash on the line the driving gets more agressive and the tempers flair quicker. Larger "trophy" races are more competative then your normal club race but I would agree are more laid back then the cash races. Don't expect to make money with this hobby. There are a VERY VERY few people that make a living at this. Everyone else pays to play! |
