Default Gearing a ZX5-SP

I recently got a ZX5-SP from this wonderful community.

I took it out for a test run with the "out of kit" 17t pinion on a Team Orion Formula Pro brushed mod motor. My research tells me that it's either a 17t or a 15t. It's not stamped on the housing, and I didn't buy new, so I can't be sure. I have also been extremely lazy about counting the teeth on the spur, but the seller told me it was the stock spur.

While testing it, I had radio issues, so I got about one lap of a small track about 50'x75' and a couple of sprints back and forth along the straight. It was wicked fast, but in that short time the motor was very hot to touch. I'm sure I couldn't hold my finger on it for more than a couple of seconds. I don't have a temp gun, but I'm told that's a reasonable qualitative guage of max motor temp.

I don't think that there was any excessive resistance in the drivetrain, and I'm sure the gear mesh was good, since I tried to put a 27t pinion in it and there wasn't enough room in the motor mount to get a good gear mesh.

I imagine if I had tried to run a race with this, it would have cooked the motor.

I was running a 7.4v lipo at 25c. The mod motor (can't put URLs in my posts yet) Oriion SV2 red and orange one.
with a Novak gt7 whick is supposed to have no brushed motor limit.

Any thoughts on motor temp. I was actually concerned about it melting the chassis.

I'm only about two race seasons into 2wd stock where we don't have to worry about motor or ESC temp. I'm totally new to mod 4wd.

Thanks.

I would start buy dropping some teeth on the pinion. Good luck.

I would try a 15-tooth and evaluate from their. Run it for 5-6 minutes and monitor the temp. I know a brushless motor should not exceed 160', but I am not sure about a brushed motor. Check your instruction manual or call Kyosho, they were very helpful to me in the past.
