Default SC10 - Trans / Diff questions

I picked up a RTR SC10 a few weeks ago, absolutely love it!

Anyway, I replaced the stock motor/esc with a SXX/X-12 (8.5) setup.
It ran so buttery smooth and quiet, all I could hear was the sweet sound of the motor.

After a few runs, I blew up my Idler gear. We replaced it got it back out on the track and ever since then its been a bit noisier than before. As far as I can tell, everything went back together correctly and all the gears are still in good shape. I even took the trans apart again later to fill the diff with 35wt oil. Yes, my mesh is also correct, even had one of the local "experts" come take a look at it today.

It makes a "gear clicking" sound. Its not loud, so I don't think its the "diff problem", but I did get some shims (and new diff housing/idler/spur) just incase.

So, 2 questions here...

Any ideas what could be the cause of the noise?

If I do rebuild the diff, I heard someone say that with brushless motors BOTH shims should go inside...and none on the outside. Any truth to that?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
