Hi Gabe,
I don’t know if you got my email already, sorry ‘bout the address mix up.
First of all, I must say thanks for helping out us racers, it is really great that guys like yourself are so accessible in this sport.

Now onto some q’s:
Recently I entered in the biggest r/c race of my life, and got absolutely waxed. I was crashing all over, breaking my cars almost every run, only got two runs from five to qualify, and finished flat last! The laps I did get were so far off, they were probably ¼ of a lap slower than the fast guys, per lap!!!
My problem was, I had never driven on a surface like hard pack before, never on a blue groove especially. I had also not driven on a track with pipes before. I also race touring cars at an onroad carpet track where the layout changes entirely from week to week.
The questions related to this are, how do you get yourself (I mean your memory of the layout here) dialed into a track real quick, so you have an edge over the other guys who have only seen the track as long as you have? How do you go about getting dialed on a new surface when you have seen it for the first time?
Then the next obvious question is, how do you know/decide what little set up changes are going to start shedding those extra 10ths?

I also noticed that I ran the same setup as the guy that won, motor wind, gearing, shocks everything, and obviously it was my driving that was the difference (i.e. sucked). The thing I noticed is these guys are soooooo smoooooooth when they drive an rc car. Rather than booting it down the straight and sliding it sideways into the 90 degree left at the end like I was, the winner was backing off 2/3 of the way down the straight. When the track was slick, these guys were impossibly fast, they have such good throttle control.
I guess it’s a pretty broad question, but how do you get your skills up to know how to do that?

And finally, coz I’ve always wanted to know, what effect does putting spacers inside your buggy’s shock have, and what about putting the spacers on the outside?

Cheers Gabe, sorry to anyone that thinks this is too long… if I could I would hook up one of those sessions, but I live a very long distance away…

J

I have a XXX-4 G+ edition and was wondering, the front hub carriers seem to always break, even if i land straigh, just slightly on the front side. are there any aftermarket upgrades I would get to fix this? or some tips to help not break them as much? (I'm working on the driving better thing )

Hi, in the start of this thread you stated.

As for right now, I don't have a car, but I do have my dusty old XX-T that I (and many other fast drivers) think was the best off-road truck ever built! Just wish I could get parts for it, to rebuild the diff, trans and some new graphite arms and front bulkhead. If I had those parts I would run in at the Nats!

I was wondering if you had some setup sheets or tips for that truck. I donated mine to my nephew, and i didnt run the truck very long so i dont know it very well. Any info on getting it to handle on a hardpack clay track or setup in general would help. And before someone flames me, yes i have been to losi's site and tried the info there.

Btw, Im not saying that the truck is bad driving or anything. I just think that there is room for improvement.

The footage Late Nights at Socal was so dialed. Some of the craziest stuff Ive ever seen. I had borrowed the video about a year ago from someone but they lost it. Anyway I got to meet Hodapp at this past years offroad Nats. and he has been trying to find a copy. Do you have a way to get him one if you have it still. Also do you have anything else like that that I could get my hands on, I got the footage from April Fools. The Socal one was the best though, especially the speed runs and the M80s. I still laugh my a$$ off everytime I think of it. Good luck in your comeback, although you never really left, you got the skillz!
