HoBao Hyper 9E thread
#3166

I went to Mikes in Houston yesterday and ran about 6 packs of 4s through the 9E for the fist time. Wow! If I was buying lipos from start I prabably would go 3s, but since I already have two 4s lipos I think I will stick with that. It was getting to top speed on the straight with the 4s with the 14t just about the time I had to get on the brake. And there was nothing there yesterday that could pass me in the straight. Being my first outing with a 1/8 buggy I could not keep up very well with the seasoned guys after that, but it was fun! And I found out loctite is worth its weight in gold!
Neither of the hobby shops here on the north side of Houston carry Ofna parts, and Tower doesn't really either. So do you buy parts straight from Ofna or is there a better online place? Thanks

I highly recommend NitroHouse. Great prices and great customer service. Plus- one of the designers of the Hyper 9E is often available to answer any setup questions you may have- Tim Bump. I purchased my first Hyper 9E from NitroHouse- and I buy most of my parts from NitroHouse as well.
PS. Happy New Year Everyone
This is a great thread- and the Hyper 9E is still my favorite 1/8th scale 100% purpose built for electric- buggy. And I'm very grateful that Ofna continues to offer upgrade and new option parts such as the new Universal Center- Solid Steal Drive Shaft- and the new 42Tooth Derlin Non-Metal Spur Gear as well.
And special thanks to DJ Ofna customer service tech for helping me with my first Hyper 9E with setup tips and advice when I first purchase the Hyper 9E when the buggy had just been released for puchase. I never thought I could be so happy with a 1/8th scale buggy- durability- extremely simplistic design- extremely efficient and centralized- center drive line- and very well balanced.
May we all have a great year of rc racing

Good info. James, the pictures are about worthless though as some are
blury & their to small to see anything...Nice try though...
Also I don't understand what the 3X6 cap screws do or where you put
them in the C hubs...
Thanks for the part numbers for the hop ups. Tim Bump told me when
I ordered my Hyper 9 that no hop ups were needed for the buggy as
it is bullet proof right out of the box. I hope he was right because I'm
racing at two tracks this weekend for the first runs on my new buggy
& no one has parts for the Hyper 9 anywhere I race...
I didn't like the looks of the plastic shock caps but Tim claims they
don't break...We'll see...

If you look at the backside of your c-hub there is an extra hole right where the tie rod hit at full turn, thats where the screw goes, I had a picture up but i'm not sure what happened.

- Use 3x6 cap head scres in front C knuckle to prevent oversteer which will cause CVA to pop out when landing and turning at the same time.(pic below)
-Boil you wing, this will help keep them from breaking.
-Drill your top plate and run a longer screw with a locknut for the front body post, this will prevent it from backing out during a race and finishing like an aligator.(pic below)

I have all of my hop ups listed, which one are you referring to?
Upgrades:
OFN28208 CNC shock caps
OFN29148 CNC spring retainer
OFN29147 CNC rear upright
OFN29331 CNC chassis brace
OFN10994 serrated wheel nuts
Tekno mud guards
Snr chassis brace w/esc plate -------maybe this one?
You may need to do a little tweaking with this setup and indoor but I am having very good results with this outdoor. First race is January 15th at Revelations for their annual Airtronics Winter nationals

Heres how my first 3 days at the track went with my Hyper 9..
First off I'm running Tekin 1900 & RX8 with 4S..
Test day Friday not so good. In less then 2 batteries I broke a front arm.
(Good thing I took heed in what many have posted here about the front
arms snapping like pop corn) I had ordered spare arms (thanks guys)
What really pizzed me off about that was I never crashed & never hit
anything. All I did was nose into a few jumps at low speed trying to find
some timing through some jumps and I was being very timid about driving
this fire breathing monster. Then the end to my day came from a guy
jumping the pipe with a Truggy hitting me head on (low speed) and the
shock cap broke clean off. (no parts around here for the Hyper) but my
local hobby shop had some O'Donnell 17mm shocks hanging on the wall.
I bought the shocks because they came with mounts for the shock tower.
I screwed the O'Donnell shock caps on and put their mounts in my shock
tower (all was good again)
So test day was all shot to h*ll... (no biggie)
First race day it ran OK" but it was hard to tell because I was affaid of
the dam thing. (I've raced nitro 1/8th buggies for years and these are
nothing like those pussy cats) I did manage to TQ by a lap though"
In the main I found out these E buggy drivers are no friendlier in mains
then the nitro guys and they beat the living snot out of me LOL" I finished
in 3rd 7 seconds behind the leader...
Second race day was at 702 in vegas on thier 60 X 80 foot indoor track.
This was very intimidating to say the least. I sucked (POINT BLANK")
by the end of the main I got it slightly figured out and turned fast enough
lap times to be competitive with the winner. (to little to late")
Over all the first day I give the Hyper a zero on a scale of 1 to 10 for
being a strong tuff buggy.
I've never in almost 30 years of R/C
racing seen anything break so easy. All my 1/8th nitro buggies were 99%
bullet proof (except my Thunder Tiger) which I threw over the fence real
quick. To me the break in my arm looked like a defective arm so I'll hang
on to the Hyper for a while longer. Plastic shock caps on a supposed race
buggy is just plain stupid IMO"
By day 3 I give the buggy a 7 out of 10 for a strong tuff buggy. We'll see
how that goes after a few more race days??
Over all it works OK" but mine pushs like a dump truck right now. I know
this E thing will take time to work out after being a nitro buggy driver
for so long, so I'll work on the pushing problem I caused because the
thing was so loose out of the box I went 180 the other way to learn to
drive it. You can't learn anything about driving a new car if it's doing
donuts every corner LOL" So I'll work on more steering once I'm more
comfortable driving it..
Just in case some people think I'm bashing the Hyper 9, I'm not. I will
put the time in to give it a fair shot until it proves to be as unreliable
as my Thunder Tiger was. (I really think the arm was defective and I
saved it in case the boys at Nitro House want it back?)
I'm going to Nitro House's home track this weekend (West Coast) &
hope to get to meet some of the guys...

I recently purchased a Hyper 9e but I'm experiencing what seems to be radio interference, these are the electronics used:
Airtronics M8 with Spektrum module
Spektrum SR3500 receiver
CC Mamba Monster esc mounted on the chassis using SNR carbon fiber esc mount
CC 2200kv motor
I already tried another receiver and also added a Novak capacitor and no improvement. Is it possible that the harmonics produced by the metal spur and the pinion are interfering with the radio system?
Thanks in advance, jb
