The ESC is the newest version of the XBR which was the update from the original SS.

8.5 is the low turn limit for them. Anything lower and you would need to go GTB or another manufacturer on the ESC.

then would i not benefit from going ahead and waiting it out for the 10.5 as it comes with the GTB esc already...

The Havoc is the updated XBR no matter 8.5, 10.5, 17.5 or 21.5. The GTB 10.5 has been out for ages and you can buy that anywhere, but it's typically $239 or more.

You were initially looking in the sub $150 range if I recall correctly.

Get the 8.5 Havoc setup. There's always 10.5 motors for sale used and that's probably going to increase because ROAR will mandate the 13.5 motor for superstock (formerly known as 19turn/10.5) and since most tracks follow ROAR rules you can bet there will be lots more 10.5's for sale which drives the price down.

I've been using this setup for about 2 months now, with no problems. I race with it in 2wd mod buggy. No over heating, plenty of power, all the adjustments anybody could need. Plus its only 150 bucks. I would highly reccomend this to anybody who is going club racing.

I would disagree with you here.

For off-road, I have several XBR systems and they have all performed flawless. I run them in a few of my oval cars as well. Very good ESC and motor for the money.

The only GTB I own is in my 4wd because I needed it to support a 4.5 motor.

No its not a ''basher system'' i have one and a GTB. The MM is fast but it is a good system and can take a lot. I would go with a GTB, there is alot of corner speed un like the MM but with the mamba there is stright away speed.
