Default A little confused about novak 17.5 in B4

First off, i have read all the threads about gearing on these, but i did not find an answer to my question.

I bought a GTB/17.5ss for my B4. I put everything in the car last night and it went together fine. I picked up a 31 tooth pinion because i have read so many times that these need to be geared to the moon to be fast.

So last night i put this pinion on it and it barely fits on with the stock 81 spur, the gear mesh is kinda nice. I knew this would be low for a 17.5

While test running, it is pretty fast and has a ton of torque, but, its getting hotter than id like on this low gearing. At not even the end of the run, i could hold my finger on it for 7 seconds, no longer. (I dont have a temp gauge yet)

So I am wondering if this is normal, because i hear about people using like 66 tooth spurs and stuff. could my gear mesh be doing this?

thanks,
Dean

How are you testing it. On a track, Front yard, Street.....? That gearing is low for even a truck so it working at a hight RPM all the time. If you dont want to change the slipper out run the 78spur with a 33 pinion and see how that works. Its still alittle low but your motor will run much better and you will like the performance.

always run the car for a couple minutes and check the temp if your not sure.

Thanks for the response.

I have heard undergearing can cause problems, but i didnt think it was too undergeared. so if i get a 78 spur and a 33 pinion it will run cooler?
the speed control wasnt the least bit hot

Thanks

edit: i was just running it around up and down the street

Also check that the bearing on the shaft side of the motor isnt seized. I bought a novak 17.5 a while back and the bearing was seized right out of the package, the motor ran, just super HOT.

Thanks for the responses.

I plan on getting a 78 spur and a bigger pinion. I have read that the spur from a kyosho zx5 will fit if you trim the slipper pads, is this true?

i dont think the front bearing is seized, it rolls really smooth and its not really hot, but i think i will check it out anyway,

Thanks
Dean

oh, and ill be running this at ocrc, if that helps

I'd say if you could hold your finger on it for 7 seconds, its not too hot. Too hot would be 2 sec or less. With an 81/31 I'd say your about 9 teeth under geared. 66/34 should be pretty good. Though this will of course need modifications.

If you think you have power now, wait till you gear it properly. Like you've read, you need to gear it to the moon. I run 33/66 and after racing for 10 minutes the motor is only 125

What Brand & Model of Spurs are you guys using & where did you buy them? I'm trying to locate anything smaller than a 75 locally and not having any luck.

I've got the B3 Slipper Mod right now, gearing it 33/75 and the motor is basically cold after a run.

The lowest spurs associated makes are 78t. I have heard a 74 or 76 tooth kyosho zx5 spur will fit with a little modding.

where are people getting 66t spurs??

Thanks
