The vintage offroad thread

I am looking to restore something this winter but still be able to run it at the track every now and then, would would be a good rc to restore, I am mostly try to stick with american and buggy. The older taymias look to toyish for me.

UltegraSTI 11-16-2008 09:05 AM

something i found out the hard way. if you didnt have a direct connection to it as a kid, then it just doesnt have extra something in meaning when u pick 1 up later. i bought a few bugs that i always wanted as a kid gaukin at the mail order catalogs but no way could afford. got them as an adult and they sat on the shelf. my blackfoot is a different story. sits proudly here with my choice of original body (stompin' around) or my custom painted body my dad had done for me back then. i change em out here and there just for show.

but again, try and find somethin u had a connection to in some way. make its better IMO

might as well do a XXX, its almost 10 years old or a xx4, that thing came out in 96 I believe. Parts still readily available and you can stay competitive if you want to race. Thats vintage enough.

roadrashracing2 11-16-2008 09:23 AM

would a xx buggy be a good choice? I've only been in r/c for a few years so the old stuff is new to me? Would would be a better choice rc10 gold or xx buggy.

I couldn't agree with you more about finding a kit that has meaning. I'm about to pick a NIB Tamiya Stadium Thunder, it's the closest thing that I can get to the O.G. Stadium Blitzer I got when I was 10yrs old (15yrs ago) Now that thing has some meaning to me!

Anyway good luck on your resto. What ever you do... if you do, do a rc10 gold tub they are out there, but you might spend a pretty penny getting all the parts together and making it as "clean" as you might want it. Good luck either way and keep us updated.

If by your battery doesnt work you mean your running lipo, the guys running at my track with xx4's run their lipos on the drivers side of the car and run all the electronics on the other side and just add weight to balance it back out and add the difference with the lipo

JamesnMeyer 11-16-2008 11:42 AM

RC10 gold tub would be better. Even that black tub RC10 would be great and better than the XX I have.

I'm a losi guy anyway, I can get parts local too.

rced1 11-16-2008 01:48 PM

If anyone is interested I have a RC10 gold tub listed in the for sale section:

I'd love to find an old JRx2 5 link to run again.....that was such a fun car as it was so different

roadrashracing2 11-16-2008 02:50 PM

Lol I couldn't afford them then and still can't. Ebay had a NIB Sand Scorcher for just $3400

UltegraSTI 11-16-2008 03:08 PM

idk how any1 could afford those SRBs, let alone those crazy brits who run theirs all the time.

gold tubs are fine if u had 1, or if u were a 5link guy. thats cool too. tires are the big headache these days since the sizes changed a couple times since the 1.9/1.5 days. 2.1/1.9 2.1/2.0 then finally 2.2. i think most who ran at that vintage nationals up north used modern wheel/tire combos on the old cars as vintage rubber is pretty much useless for all but show.

pyro18t 11-16-2008 05:51 PM

So did you wind up going with a XX-4? Cool cars IMO. And if you start racing you now have a XXX-4 for smooth tracks and a XX-4 for the ruff stuff.

roadrashracing2 11-16-2008 05:55 PM

I got a xxcr that needs some tlc, I was able to find the parts I need, I bought a set of threaded shocks on here, and now just need the buggy, battery and wing mount. Its not getting vitage radio gear, its getting a 13.5 brushless.

roadrashracing2 11-16-2008 06:58 PM

How old must an r/c be to be considered vintage?

I did find this link for you losi guys:

http://www.vintagelosi.com

pyro18t 11-16-2008 07:24 PM

I think anything that is no longer in production and is a pain in the butt to find parts for is considered vintage in my book.

roadrashracing2 11-16-2008 07:25 PM

Like an x-ray touring car that only needs to be a few years old. Does anyone know when the first xx came out?

tecniquin2001 11-16-2008 07:57 PM

The Losi XX it's an awesome car, It can still hang with the newer stuff, and it's built tough, I ran mine this past Saturday, with a 10.5 brushless and lipo battery, in the 19/10.5 class, against the newer XXXs,RB5s and B4s, and I was keeping up with them, even leading the race for a couple of laps.

I've been racing it for 3-4 months now, and I've only broken the rear pivot mount, due to a bad crash.

Some parts from the XXX are interchangeable with the XX, like the rear pivot support, CVDs, Spur gear assembly, and wheels.

As for body, I mock fitted an RB5 body onto it, and with a bit of creative cutting, it will fit almost perfect on the XX. You can still buy a new XX body from Horizonhobby.com, which own Losi now.

You made a good choice in buying a XX.
The XX was released at around 1993 and 1994.

Also, there is plenty of parts availability on:

www.Ebay.com
www.losipartshouse.com
www.horizonhobby.com
www.amainhobbies.com

I think the XX buggy came out in early '94, maybe late '93. Based on protos ran at the '93 worlds I think.

tecniquin2001 11-16-2008 08:33 PM

WOa, you got the blue motor plate:eek: awesome....

Now, take apart the tranny, give it a good cleaning, maybe buy a new set of bearings, re-grease and re-assemble, and run the heck out of it. you'll be pleasantly surprised:nod:

pyro18t 11-16-2008 08:51 PM

Man what a sexy car!

I SWEAR by Losipartshouse.com it's a great place to get stuff.

Momo5 11-17-2008 12:59 AM

Yeah if your gonna go losi go with something really vintage like the Jrx2 or even the Jrx Pro. I ran the hell out of my Pro back in the day....

cherokee 11-17-2008 06:49 AM

It is very easy to mod current wheels to fit on a classic gold tub, then if you want to use modern out drives that is very easy also. Very easy to mount current arms, pretty easy to mount just about anything from the current AE buggies to the gold tub...Wheels and tires are so easy to do it is a no brainer. If you are wanting a 100% vintage buggy or truck then you have to do some looking but everything is still very easy to find. If you want to race it, and they still do pretty well in a club setting you can get your gold tub up 20yrs with modern arms and such...it is a blast to run your old stuff, I just dusted off my old gold tub that I had from the 80's...it was a blast and it did not do too bad. The old T2 is going to a practice night tonight, just got it going last night....LONG LIVE OLD SCHOOL!!!!

Do some reasearch before you listen to much what is said on the internet, much of it is garbage.

Check out rc10talk.com and you can get all the info

tecniquin2001 11-17-2008 07:47 AM

I second Cherokee on that one, check out RC10Talk.com, they have very knowleagable people when it comes to the Losi cars. That's were I get most of my info.

acevtwin 11-17-2008 08:36 AM

The idea of a Losi XX-4 being "vintage" is crazy. The XX-4 is still widely used today and is very competitive.
We ran a Vintage class last year at our local race track. Your vehicle had to be made before 1990. Lots of rc10's, a couple Grasshoppers, a Frog and a Hornet. An old Losi something, and I run a Dyna Storm. Now Im sure one of you guys out there know that The Dyna Storm was too knew for the rules. Well they didn't, So I ran it! The point to all this is that we considedered anything built 1990 or earlier was Vintage.

JamesnMeyer 11-17-2008 09:08 AM

Dang I hope you got a good deal on that!

tecniquin2001 11-17-2008 04:30 PM

all it needs is a good dusting, and to be re-assembled...

I just purchased a set of XX cr front axle wideners.:D

like I said before, these cars are still quite capable to run with the newer buggies.:sneaky:

roadrashracing2 11-17-2008 04:32 PM

roadrashracing2 11-17-2008 04:35 PM

I really need a used body, so I can play with it right away:sneaky:

tecniquin2001 11-17-2008 07:32 PM

The Kyosho RB5 bodies fit pretty good, it'll just take some creative cutting.

and Horizonhobby.com sells the XX bodies for $17 or so plus shipping.

roadrashracing2 11-19-2008 06:01 PM

the losi xx is done, I traded a touring car for a gold tube with extra parts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...RC/RC-008p.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...RC/RC-003p.jpg

So if someone needs some xx parts let me know, I know I have some rpm front arms, front shock towers, and a few other things.
