Default Brushless problem

I have had a Novak 10.5 for a few months now that I bought used . Last time I ran it I thought I broke a gear from the way it was making this noise and not moving well . I checked everything and ok . It`s been a few weeks since then and was getting everything ready to race tonight . I put a battery in to make sure everything was ok .

Well , it`s not ok . Seems the motor is cogging at low and higher rpms and doesn`t get to the high rpms it used to . I checked the motor and reset the ESC and same . Also sometimes the motor won`t spin unless I manually spin it to get going . Any ideas ? Is this a motor issue or ESC issue ? Thanks for any help .

Hi, doesn't the ESC have some led lights? and if so, I think they may tell you what the issue may be. I had a Novak HV system a long time ago and I had a similar issue, the led's indicated a "locked rotor" error and when I contacted Novak they said I had to send it in for repair (ESC). I would contact Novak and get there feedback.

This might be a dumb thing to think of but mine cogged because of the ecs being to close to the reciever or anntena.

You need to get another motor and check it with that speedo. You don't mention what brand the speedo is.... If a GTB there is a remote possibility that your power cap is bad. But to be perectly honest I had a novak GTB do exactly what you describe. It was toast. They didn't tell me what happened to it or what caused it, they just replaced it.

Mine was running fine out on the track and just went to crap also.

Have a 3.5 that acted like that, pinion end bearing was bad.

It also was a used motor.

Has a new bearing in it . Yes it is the GTB and I emailed Novak so hopefully they have an answer . I`m not going to buy another motor and then find out the ESC is shot . Doesn`t the leds light up a certain way if the esc or motor is toast ?

Mine "lit up" as if it was all normal even though it didn't work. Call up a buddy and borrow a motor just to test. At the same time have them hook up our motor to their speed control and see how it runs.

I put in a brushed motor and ESC works fine . So guess it`s time for a new brushless motor . Thanks for all the replies .

I've sent 2 systems in over time for similar issues. One was ESC, one was Motor.

Best option is to send it to Novak and let them look into it. That's likely what they will suggest anyway.

Sounds like you are missing a phase. If you can spin it to get it going it will still run on the other two, but like you found it will cog low and won't rev. This can be caused by a faulty sensor in the motor, the sensor wires being broken/not plugged in, or the worst case is the esc lost something inside. Like everyone has said, try to find another motor to try and that will determine if its the motor or esc.

Had the same problem with another brand of ESC. They all work on the same principle. If the sensor cable/array on the motor is ok, you're right, it is a bad phase in the ESC. The horrible noise comes from the motor suddenly stopping and starting again. I could actually feel my 2wd buggy kick when I held it in my hand.

Endbell of the motor all I could remove was the black plastic plate and couldn`t see if the sensor wires were ok . Waiting to hear back from Novak but might just get a new ESC and motor anyways . I don`t want to be waiting a few weeks to race . Also , if there is a bad phase wouldn`t it affect when running a brushed motor ? Is there a way to test to see if all three phases are working ? Besides trying another motor .

I'm just making an educated guess here. Seeing how the wiring is done when using a brushed motor with a brushless/brushed ESC you may not notice as much of a problem. When the ESC is re programmed to run brushed it runs the FETs differently. When you rewire the ESC to run brushed, all three phases are paralleled to the negative motor terminal. The two good phases may make up for the lost phase. The only problem you may notice is extra heat, and possibly lower run times.

I had a similar problem with my 13.5. put a different motor in and all was well. Later on i noticed i had a sensor wire on the plug end that seemed like it broke. haven't tried to fix and run yet. Took the motor apart and it looked all good. idk
