Default AE T4 spur gears for 17.5 brushless racing

Hey guys,

With the popularity of brushless in racing, is anybody making a spur gear smaller than a 78 that fits a T4, without slipper modifications?

I'm running 78/33 with the Novak 17.5, and I come off the track below 100 degrees. In theory, I should gear up, since I understand the desired temp is 120 to 130. But I'm at the limits of the motor mount slots, and rear protective cover. A spur gear with fewer teeth would help alleviate the problem.

Looking at the gear construction, it could be made smaller without touching the slipper pads.

AE? Kimbrough? Anybody? Please help us racers......

You can use a Losi 76T spur. You just need to use the Losi slipper pads as well. I'm using this in my B44 and it works fine.

I think KDub was talking about a possible 75/72 spur option, I believe it was in the t5/b5 thread. Not sure if it's ever coming out or if they're working on it though. The losi slipper setup should work fine, I think.

I'm making a bolt-on slipper eliminator/spur adapter as we speak. I should have the prototypes this week.

The Losi 76 will work without modification, just remeber to get the losi slipper pads. This BL/spur size problem isnt just with offroad, my new CRC pan car has a 72 in it (smallest I could find) and still run the 1/8" diff balls. These 13.5's can easily run a FDR of 5:1.

I doubt eliminating the slipper on a truck is a good thing. When landing from a jump it will transfer the force to the diff. That was why slippers were developed to absorb the jolt and help in slippery conditions. Maybe in stock it won't be a big issue. You really need to develop an eliminator, there are some on the market already. Dirt oval racers use them.

The spur adapters I've seen are screw-down hubs that clamp to the shaft. Mine has the correct hole for the shaft, so it bolts on and is retained by the stock spring and hut...so it can be replaced by the slipper again without gouges from screws. Plus, it's a full hub, like a TC.

I talked to a few pro and big-time guys about it and the overwhelming consensus is that a slipper is not used (or not necessary) in stock.

I'm using a Kyosho 76 tooth spur with their friction pads. Bolts right on. I'm able to go to a 76/35 combination.

Never measured the motor temp because it was only warm to the touch. BTW this is in a B4 not a T4. With the tire size difference I imagine the motor temp will be higher in the T4.

I've heard that temps consistantly over 180 degrees starts to degrade the rotor. If that's true then you would want to keep it under 180.

We are making a 75 and 72. I will keep everyone posted when they are ready. I hope we can have it out this summer sometime. Thanks!

I should have the prototype hubs later today or tomorrow. Hopefully, I should have them mounted up and running on all three major cars (RB-5, B4 and CR) this weekend.
