Hey all,

Im really loosing sleep at night trying to figure out how to gear my B4, i have heard anywhere from advanced algebra calculations, to just run stock gearing? However what confuses me is, why use a 81 82 84 spur gear, when you could run lets say an 81 with a 20 tooth pinion, or an 84 spur with a 23tooth pinion. I have a FTB4 and a 12x2 mod checkpoint motor. Here and there i will put a money 19turn in, and run an 84 spur and a 24 or 25tooth pinion? But how do we know what our maximum gearing or minimium gearing should be? Can i run an 84tooth spur gear and a 23 or 24tooth pinion without overheating? or over gearing? Of im im looking for more punch off the line run an 84 with a 22, or even change to an 81 and run a 22! Just seems so confusing.

Well it depends on the track for gearing. Bashin not so much. Basically just practice and see wat feels comfortable. U want enuf gear to get u done the straights but not top out mid track etc. Gearing also depends on wat motors u run. Like u have ur high RPM motor which u can take out gearing and then u have high torque which u can gear up.And if ur gearing is off meaning geared to low or to high then motor runs real hot. But that is something that u will ultimately need to play around with.

Long straights and high speed sections = larger pinion for more high speed. Lots of turns, jumps =small pinion to accelerate faster.

Racers use the different size spur gears to move the weight of the heavy motor forward or back to change the handling of the car more than to change gear ratios.

If your looking to change the low end power or top end speed, just changing pinions gears should get you the results you want.

I run my B4 with a 23T pinion on stock spur with a Reedy Quadmag 19T. It works on almost all tracks and motor temp is usually 130-140F after a 5 minute race. If its hotter than that, the comm usually needs cleaning/cutting.

For a 12x2 I'd drop to a 19 or 20T pinion depending on your track.
