feigao 9xl question..
 

I have a 9xl with a black canister, and it also has 3 wires in heat shrink coming out of it.
because al 3 of the leads are wrapped in black heat shrink, i'm not sure which ones go to the ESC.

It is a brushless motor and all 3 leads go the the esc. The esc has to be a sensorless brushless. Hook all 3 wires to the esc if the motor runs backward just switch 2 of the wires and it will reverse direction.

do i have to get the common one right at which one is it?

if I understand what youre saying...and switch 2 wires if the motor goes the wrong way....then which one is theb common wire

There really is no common wire. If it runs backward just switch any 2 wires and it will reverse. I mark my wires once I have it turning the right way so I know the next time I take the motor out.
