Default lipo fire

i was just reading about the hazards of lipo batteries, what i want to know is how to put them out. i am assuming a pw can is out of the question sense it is just water. will a co2 or dry chemical extinguisher work, if not will a D extinguisher work, and if not how the hell do you put them out.

Most household fire extinguishers are multiclass extinguishers (dry chemical, Co2) & will work fine. First thing to do would be eliminate the power source to the pack. Don't be freaked out about lipo horror stories. Sure they can do a lot of damage, but a little common sense goes a long way. I never sit & watch my packs charge, that would be like watching paint dry. But I'm always near by. I wouldn't plug a pack in & leave the house. Read up, most lipo companies will have precautions in the box & on the pack, definitely on their website.
Lipo charger, balancer (not needed on every charge) Charge rate 1C ex. 4800 [email protected]. Some packs can be charged at 2C.

I have read that a bucket of salt water or a bucket of sand is useful. If you follow the manufacturers instructions the likelyhood of a lipo fire is practically non-existent. The only problem we have seen by one of our local racers when he was at home, and started a lipo charging but use the NIMH setting on his charger. Battery puffed four times its size and split its plates apart but did not blaze.

Hell I tried to get one to burn the other day. Maxamps 4000 sadlle pack... I cut the deans off, twisted the + & - wires together (with gloves on of course, safety first) & threw it out in the driveway. Damn thing swelled up twice its size, started hissing, smoking & oozing but would not burn. Very disappointing

I seen one get misused it just puffed up, i am sure if we left it on the charger it would have gotten worse but it didnt do anything as violent as nimh is when it lets go. Just get a lipo sack too then if it burns you got alittle precaution

I just had a lipo fire over the weekend. It fizzed, smoked, melted a couple of things then caught fire after I flung the pack out of the car and it hit the garage floor.

well havent seen lipo catch fire. I did see them swell. But I have seen NIMH catch fire and blow. One pack blew and hit ceiling. IB 3800's were notorious for blowing.

I've seen a lot of nimh fires/explosions and I have yet to see a lipo flame or pop in the whole time that I've been in this hobby. Personally, I've had a mini-t nimh pack blow up on the charger and just this past weekend had a brand new Trinity EP4600 nimh pack catch fire and melt the chassis of my XXX-t on its very first run:

I've ordered a lipo pack for the XXX-T...who knows what I'll burn up now

I think one of the cells may have been bad. The battery is only 2 weeks old and has 3 charges on it. I charged the pack last weekend and it sat for 6 days un touched. I took the pack off the shelf and as I was placing it in the buggy it swelled, fizzed and blew out a garage full of smoke.

It would have popped much sooner if it was overcharged and it was not punctured. If you look at the pictures the velcro is on the bottom to keep it from moving, and the cell that blew was on the top. It happend while I was putting it into the buggy and it was not plugged in to anything.

I mentioned this to Austin, over at Max Amps and emailed him the same pictures. He offered to ship me a new one immediately at no charge. So I cant really complain, other than it sucks that it happened and that I had to replace a couple of damaged things.
