battery scare
 

when ever i charge my batteries......(15amp powersupply, duratrax ice w/banana plugs. my batteries are all doing it 4600 ep, 3300 matched).

towards the end of the charge i hear a crackling noise and my batteries are making short bursts of sparks where the banana plugs are connected to the battery....yes they are on correctly postitive with the positive and negitive with the negitive. what is this??!?!:confused::confused::confused:

no other metal is touching the connectors

Are the battery packs in the vehicle when you charge them?

Are they hot?

Do some cells feel warmer than others?

no they feal all the same temperature. but all 6 of my batteries are doing it

how many amps are you charging them at?

if the cells are not hot, you could try and hook up a multimeter onto the batteries and see if there are any big spikes...and check each cells voltage...but since all your batts are doing it, it doesn't sound like a bad cell.

could also be your charger.. mabey try another and see if it stops? I think its nothing more then a loose connection or bad solder somewhere.

I mean, where is it sparking, the ends of the cells, or the connector you used? sounds like theres a short somewhere.

well i can try charging it with deans instead of banana plugs and see what happens.....

I don't know about the sparks, but it sounds like the cells are venting.

Whats the peak detection setting on your charger set too? it's probably 2x as high as it should be.

It seems you are saying that the sparks are from the bannana connectors, not the batteries themselves, then I suspect the connectors are not making good contact. Not cell venting.

Are the connectors getting warm/hot? If so, it seems that they are warming up, and thus expanding slightly. Towards the end they expand enough that ya start losing contact, then the sparks start.

Low budget fix, crimp the connectors with pliers some to get a better contact. Better, new connectors.

yeah, that sounds like it. also, strange question, but are your batteries vibrating in any way? like, a wobbly table? could be the plugs bouncing round in the sockets.

if you have the battery bars bent 90 degrees and have them laying against the side of the cell they could have rubbed through the shrink wrap and contacting the can.

i know i had to have some of my battery connectors like this for my jrxs and accidentally had one go through and had a cell overheat from shorting.

Yea, he is right. You must always make sure those bars are positioned away from the outside of the cells.

if you must have them laying against the can heatshrink them..
use appropriate colors so you dont accidentally reverse the polarity. the heatshrink will also protect from rubbing through

I would not trust Banana plugs myself because they might compress.I would use sermos connectors if it were me they also go by duratrax powerpole and lite speed.If you are racing that the way to go and even if you are not,why not if you are great run times on your packs.they are better than Tamiya plugs witch can melt,I've never used anything but sermos and never a problem never seen one melt can not say enough good stuff about them.They are like deans or Tamiya plugs where you have a male and female plug these are unisex,also another good thing is that the way they go together you can slide them so when put together they are sitting one on top of the other or side by side.The benefit to this is if you use a wire lead on your motor with a plug on the end of it so you can make motor changes easier is that because if you slide the plug's together one on top of the other on the power out side of your ESC you will not be able to plug the motor to the power in side of the ESC if you put the power in side plug's and your battery packs side by side.The other thing I alway's ask if someone want's to know what a good battery plug is do you have a local hobby shop close by if they say no then I will alway's tell them to use these and get a few extras,because it sucks for example if you use deans plugs and you need a new one and it is a male your needing and you olny have a female in your spare part's box that is now a thing of the past with these because they are unisex you will know if you have a spare sermos it will always work and they will not compress and come lose,but that's just my opinion.

not sure what car he is running those packs in. but some touring cars require those type of connectors or even direct soldering.
