Default do i have to upgrade mt speed controller....

if i decide to go brushless?....right now i have a stamp with the XL-5 controller....if i wanted a brushless motor do i have to buy the whole system?...or can i just use my stock controller?

I cannot afford lipo batts.....so i would be sticking with 4600mah sticks i have currently.

With a brushless setup you can use just about any battery your ESC will support. Personally I prefer Castle Creations ESC's, they are build solid and when used with the Castle or Phoenix Link USB cable, they are a snap to program using a Windows-based system.
