im looking to get into offroad, what would be better for beginners a 2wd buggy or a 4wd?

i ususally race touring cars but want to try something new

I like the feel of the 2wd its fun.

But nothing compares to 4x, you can corner faster its easier to drive and you can put more power down. Its a mod thing I guess.
The control is better with the 4x.
They are prone to break easier.

I would go with the 4x if you are a seasoned racer you will appreciate the 4x better I would think.?

Edit i see your a beginner. Stock is to slow for 4x unless you are running a 19t or 13.5 maybe.

Yeah, if you have raced a season of something then the 4WD would be a good next step in the racing challenge. But if you haven't raced before, be warned that 4wd is for good drivers, and rich drivers. LOL. Naw, it looks like 4wd has been getting cheaper over the years. It's too the point that I may give it a try this winter. "May" give it a try. I don't drive that good yet. I would be too out of control.

Keep this in mind guys, if you can learn to drive a 2wd profeciently, everything else will come easily. i cant name the number of times someone went from 1/8 (4wd) buggy to 1/10 2wd, and the rookies were beating them! you have to learn the fundamantals of 2wd before you go 4wd.

Maybe I either don't understand the question... or some of the responses

4WD I would think is going to be easier to drive. 2WD, and in particular 2WD mod electric buggy has typically been considered the toughest and the "elite" class; many say that if you can handle it, you can handle anything.

2WD will require much better throttle/brake control than 4WD. It seems the big issue with 4WD in the past has been durability. But, with the new Academy and AE kits (maybe Kyosho and some others too); this seems to be less of an issue. Maybe now the only problem for a beginner in 4WD is that they usually run in a mod class (but that doesn't mean you can't use a stock or mild 19T/10.5/4300 motor).

The key to whatever one you choose is to not get discouraged and probably the best way to improve is to get out on the track and practice.

I myself have run 1/8th nitro 4WD buggy mostly (currently a proud RC8 owner), but I have an AE T4 ( for stock class 13.5 BL/LiPo) and Academy SBV2 (I am starting with the 10.5 BL/LiPo) that I will be running inside this winter. In the 4WD class I know I will be out there with guys running a 5.5BL; but I will just take my time and learn how to drive consistantly and when I outgrow the 10.5BL I will step up to a hotter motor.

Think about it this way, if you were to go offroading... Weather it be in real life or at the local r/c track, its always nice to have four wheel drive

well if ur just getting into offroad, personally i would get a truck. the trucks are alot more forgiving, and your setup doesn't have to be dead on to be competitive, where as for buggy or 4wd you need to be a lil more precise on your setups. but if you dont want to go with the truck having onroad experience i would most definetly go with the 4wd.

slakr makes a good point. My opinion is that each type of vehicle drives different than another type. 2wd mod, 2wd truck, 4wd 1/10, 1/8 buggy, 1/8 truggy. None of them feel like anything else.

So I'd suggest to get something that is popular at your track. That way you can race most of the time. sometimes there will be low turnouts. On average though, you will be able to race. And each type of vehicle requires a different way to drive.

Pick one and get in the dirt. LOL.

If your thinking buggy only, learn with the 4wd them move to 2wd if you feel like going 2wd.

I wanted to stay 2wd to learn so I bought a truck, to learn with and now I am getting ready to swith to a 2wd buggy.

I also just bought a 4wd b44 just because I have always wanted a 4wd electric.

Start with either 4wd or a truck, then work your way to a buggy.

If you start with the buggy you may get discouraged.

Just my 2 cents I would find out what most people run where you are going to race becuase where I live 4wd is a good second class becuase there isnt always enought 4wds to run a class

and if you are a good/smooth driver with a touring car you will do just fine with a 2wd buggy you will have to learn to wait on the car a little and be easy with the gas its just a car you can over drive very easy and dont get me wrong you can do the same with a 4wd or a touring car I have raced them all and by the way 4wd brakes alot I dont care what one you get

the truck will prolly be the safest bet if you will want to race all the time. i used to just race 2wd buggy and 4wd and some nites i wouldn't get to race cuz not enough people showed up.

I'm not saying I disagree with you...but we have a guy who's a pretty good 1/8th guy and Drake told him to get a 2wd mod buggy if he wanted to get better...so he did.

He obviously wasn't going to win the mod 2wd nationals or anything, but a bunch of us were secretly rubbing our hands just waiting for the carnage (3.5/Lipo...LOL) and he actually did pretty well. It was really...well...shocking .
