need help with electronic issues

I have a tamiya stadium blitzer that i am putting back together for friends kid. I bought a new Caliber speedworks 540s motor for it before i put it away. I ran it once today then it acted like the battery was bad. I charged the battery and nothing happened. I saw a spark from under the mechanical speed controller so i took it apart to find the black wire that mounts to the center of the post was off. I resoddered it and now it is very jumpy. It seem like the speed controller is burning up and smells when i try to run it. I don't know much about this stuff and looking for help. Is the motor to much for it? or is the speed controller shot?Should i upgrade to a electronic speed controller and would it hook up. Looking for help on how to get it running again.

Yes.. upgrade to an electronic speed control. I think the mech control is toast.

Even if it's not completely toast.. you won't regret it once you have the ESC.
