Lipo
I'm assuming this is safe but I want to be sure. Is it safe for a lipo battery to get hot while running it? It doesn't get even warm when its charging so I wanted to be sure it was ok for it to when I run it. Thanks

where did you get the battery? they shouldn't get hot, unless they are cheapo cells that have a really low continuos C rating.

Lipos don't get warm while charging like a nimh. But they can heat up when discharged... how hot depends on how "hard" it's run. They won't get hot unless they are pushed to the limit. A cheap pack is much easier to do that.
The latest high end lipos are good enough that it's not easy to push them hard enough to get them hot. (in normal car use)
If you have packs that are getting hot, I would recommend not letting it hotter than like 130 F just to be safe.

they are maxamps 5000 3s packs. im running it in a rustler with a vxl system. and if thats the case the nim completely safe because they arent getting "hot" so to say. they arent hot to the touch but are deffinetly warm. it also all but touches the esc which i didnt think about and that gets up fairly hot to that could be why. will that hurt it? sitting next to the hot esc?

Lipos perform the best when they are warm. I actually pre-warm my packs to @90-100 if racing in cool conditions. From that point they normally only heat up maybe 10-15*
I have a Maxamps 4s 5000mah pack that I run in my 1/8 buggy.... it does a good job, never got too hot on me.
They will feel warm to the touch even at 90*
If they ever feel "hot" then I would definitely temp them so you know if it's ok or not.

50 degrees C is optimum temperature for Lipos. any cooler or hotter they don't perform as well.

depends what you mean by 'hot'.
if you touch the pack and it starts to burn you, then its TOO HOT!!!! lol
if you touch the pack and its warm to fairly warm, so that it doesnt burn you and that you can touch it forever, then its FINE.
i found that interesting at first too, how lipos dont get warm at all when charging but after a hard bashing they get nice n warm.
hope that you feel safe now knowing ur pack isnt about to blow up on ya just cause its getting warm

This is all great advice,,there is not point guessing what is safe on not when it comes to yourself and your very expensive gear.
have a look at a WATTS UP meter, when using lipo and brushless gear i have found it be priceless is saving gear,,,,it will tell you max draw in amp+volts+watts...
when matching a motor to load and esc load,,,,match the output to your esc max amps, your motor max amps and battery max output....
a lipo can overeload your gear pretty easy...check all your max amp working limits...
WATTS UP works a little like a dyno for your car,,find out how many watts of power you produce.....
