Racing a Rustler, what do i need?

i am going to start racing my rustler, and need to know what to do, and what to buy.

i have a Mamba Max 7700 in it and was planning to get this...
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXNCR2&P=ML

and people told me to do what this guy did...
http://www.ultimatetraxxas.com/proje...imate-rustler/

i just need t oknow your opinions, and what gearing to go to, im at 12/86 and need to get more torque.
and my 2400MaH batteries are hot after the 5 minute run.

some people told me to do 12/90 and that will let it run cooler, and give me more torque, what are your opinions??

A friend and I spent an entire summer a few years ago building that Ultimate rustler as per website directions....we built it to the T! It was pretty legit on the track...the rear end geometry was a little strange and having short shocks felt awkward....but it was a surprisingly solid car.

However, for all the time and effort, when you break one customized piece....it's not exactly convenient to make another one on the spot. And for about the same price of customizing a rustler, you can get a RTRT4 and build it up real nice....just my thought

but if you're gonna do the traxxas build-up, post pics!!

Honestly, all you really need is some decent 3600 batteries and the appropriate tires for the track you are running on. Try to get the dampening and spring rates in the ball park and then just go out and race the crap out of it. Get as much racing experience as you can and when you start to feel the truck is holding you back, pick up a used T4 or XXXT mf1 for $100 or so.

Don't go spending $200 to make a $50 truck worth $75.

Yea you can definitaly get a deal on a xxxt or T4, I just sold my xxxt mf1 for 100 and I know of one t4 on another forum with a ton of parts and its going for 130

if your just starting racing just keep the rustler.
buy a few upgrades:
-shocks
-tires
-batteries
-charger
-maybe better transmitter
and that should be enough
you will also prob need a table and powersupply depending on where you want to race

Try a better truck. Unless winning or at least competing is something you dont care about

Does anyone have an idea of what gearing i need to go to?
12/86 is kinda low torque...

scootr117 10-11-2007 11:07 AM

Have you adjusted the ESC any?? there are different settings in the software that change the punch.

I'm not sure what the ratio of the gear box is...but my t-4 with a 5700 pulls the wheels if I mash the trigger with a 17/87 gearing

The batteries sound the most likely cause of no "rip"...try a higher MaH pack

ERustler 10-12-2007 06:59 AM

that's more torquey gearing though... i have it on medium high punch, and can't find the disk, reformatted computer and lost it... and the website download didn't work... does anyone know where i can get a spare?

ERustler 10-12-2007 07:05 AM

what shocks do i need also?

A higher MaH pack isn't going to increase your punch at all. Putting a 4000MaH pack in the truck will have the same speed/torque etc as a 2600 it will just run almost twice as long. MaH is the capacity, think of it like a gas tank.

chewiefttc4 10-12-2007 08:46 AM

your wrong on the 4000 wont have more punch.

yes they will.
they can source alot more amperage without having a voltage drop because of the higher capacity...

do a little research

TY@TEAMTEKIN 10-12-2007 09:18 AM

It still won't be like adding more cells, it will have a little more, not a lot.

chewiefttc4 10-12-2007 05:17 PM

if they are good cells.. you will most definatly notice a difference espically with a high drain device such as the mamba max
