From my expierience, brushed motors do not last long in anything that is 18th scale. I would reccomend a Tekin mini rage, with the 5400 motor. It is a complete brushless system for 18th scale cars. I have one in a mini T and one in an Xray M18. Both are more than 2 years old with tons of runtime on them.

As for the battery, I would reccomend doing the research about lipo. If your budget is limited, than stick with the Nimh. The tekin system has a voltage cutoff for lipo so that the battery cannot be drawn down to damaging levels. I have lipos made from megatech, e-flite, and thunder power, they are all over 2 years old and still have the same power and life as the day I bought them. You do need a special charger to charge them. If you look up on the forums and internet you can read all about them. They are great batteries as long as you don't mistreat them.

I run my m18 on carpet in a fully furnished basement and can get about 40 min of runtime with a 1400 mah battery using the 5400 system. Just plug batteries in and run.

A Tekin or any other brushless system is going to be a handful for a 5 year old, esp. on LiPo batteries. It will also require you to upgrade the diff on the Mini-T. You can get your LHS to order a Graupner 280 Speed motor for about $20. It has ball bearings and replaceable brushes, runs much faster than the stock motor, and will drop right in and work with the stock electronics and diff, etc. Gear it down one or 2 teeth on the pinion (run a 12 or 13T pinion). That's how mine is set up for my 8 year old daughter. You'll need metal pinions with a set screw though, the stock push on ones won't work. As far as batteries, go to the Promatch Racing website. They have Fusion 1500's for the Mini-T for $12.99 right now.

P.S. There's a mini scale section on these forums. Probably get more help there than here, this is mostly 1/10 electric.

Here's a link to some choices. If you use a 300 size can then you need a different motor plate. The Acro is actually what I have, it's great adn it's drilled for a 280 and 300 size mounting. I ordered a Graupner but they got the Acro in instead and it's a little better motor. Just tell the LHS you need a Graupner Speed 280 Ball bearing motor.

These are the pinions I have. You can't use RC18 pinions b/c the shank is too long and the gears won't match up.
