Video Texas R/C Pro Series San Antonio Tx

Here is a short video I put together from some of the tape I shot last night at the race. Awesome racing and the track was nice as well. Toys4BigBoys always puts on a quality event as does the Pro Series. Lots of rain last week so they were working on the track daily to get it ready.

Its a blast making videos

I have some health issues that forced me to finally quit driving. First I had to give up off-road cause of the length of the mains. Then I moved to dragracing which I did ok at becasue the races are so short. But I wanted to race on a track with other cars so I tried oval racing. Did pretty good at that but eventually the problems got the best of me. So I started videoing the oval races last December. Made 50 or so of those videos and now I've started going to all the tracks in the Central Texas area to video. It helps the tracks brings in more people. So now about 6 months later I'm doing pretty much every kind of R/C racing and starting to get some pretty good stuff. I'm pleased that its all working out. I still get to go hang out at the tracks. And I don't end up in a lot of pain from racing. I'm getting some physical therapy now and hope I can get back to racing at some point but if not I still have my camera to fall back on. I don't try and make any money off it. Its something to keep my mind occupied as I have plenty to do during the week now. I amazed myself at this footage. First time I saw the scene of all the buggies coming over the jumps I thought to myself I didn't do that did I :)

Griz,

Congrats on what you are doing man, looks great, but i do wish you can go back to the tracks for racing and not only filming ...

Can you post your setup of camera brand/model and software you use to edit the videos ?

thanks,

Oh well I guess so

I use a panasonic PV-GS300 camera I think its the 320 now. 3ccd so it works a lot better under the lights. You can go completly manual with it and that always helps. The image stabilization is optical so the image is fixed before it hits the silicone. And it has a firewire interface which is a must. These cameras are right on the limit of what USB can handle. Firewire has plenty of breathing room. No skipped frames when you capture to the computer. Liquid 7 is the editor I use and I use AE:Vision Fieldskit to deinterlace. Sometimes I split the interlaced frames before I start to get 50% slowdown when played back at 30fps. Then the computer has to do little to get down to 20% which is what I use for the slowest slo-mo. The big thing is to deinterlace the video. A car will move far enough in the 1/60 sec between frames so its two separate images. This results in a lot of artifacts mostly herringbone along sharp edges. There are a lot of public domain tools to do the same thing only it takes longer. Check out vdub avsynth dscaler for starters. Mostly software people developed to deinterlace Tivo recordings. The timewarp filter in Liquid is the best for slo-mo I know of. You have your choice of dynamic or static timewarps. On the dynamic side you control everything the static is a one time slowdown or speedup with no ramp. Get something to steady the camera. I use a monopod and even when I'm hand shooting following cars I leave it on to steady and provide balance. Just pull the legs up all the way. Turn off the digital zoom as well. It will just get you into trouble in the heat of a race. Shoot lots of tape too. Get it at one of the web places and its pretty cheap. For instance the tape I use is 2 for 25 bucks locally. But if I buy in bulk I get 20 for 50 bucks. A big savings. Then its just doing them over and over until you get used to the editor and all that then your creativity can come out. I was a musician at one time went to music school. And I worked on a radio station for a few years while I was in college. This is just an extension of mixing a few hours of music on the radio really. Just a lot more fun :)
