I have just completed modifying a Losi BK2 to convert it into a Mid Mounted Motor version.

I have read in a couple of different forums that doing a Mid Motor Conversion changes the way the car handles and reacts and makes it similar in handling to a 4wd so i thought why not see if I can firstly make the conversion work and secondly make it handle.

I have completed the conversion today and gave the car a run out at Ipswich this afternoon just as a shakedown run to make sure it wold stay together ( which thankfully it did).

I will have the car at the Natonals at Maitland and hopefully i will be running it during the event in 2wd stock.

If anyine wants to have a look at it they will be most welcome to see the conversion work involved in changing it.

I saw a couple while i was racing in England. They said it was good for high grip tracks (grass, astro turf) but not too good for dirt. How did it go??

I would think it would steer less than it did before since the CG is moved forward. Do you have a picture of the whole car?

Have you guys ever bought a case of pop or beer and placed it in your shopping cart? If So, I bet that you noticed that the farther forward you put the case the harder it is to steer. the farther back, the better! I learned that one from Matt Francis. I figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it. and the xxx platform is far from broke

I ran the car out at Ipswich on the weekend Mark and it seems to steer brilliantly and it jumps perfectly flat through the air.

Yes the CG is moved forward compared to the normal layout but this conversion will stop the pendulum effect that normal buggies suffer from.
The weight balance is fairly even front to back.

No i haven't done a "how to" or anything like that yet i want to test it a bit more before i worry about doing that.

The pendulum effect is when the rear of the buggy wants to rotate drastically in a turn. This is caused by the motor being mounted in the rear of the buggy causing the CG to be farther rearward in the buggy. By moving the motor forward the CG is closer to the center of the buggy which will make it steer better on high traction surfaces. More like an F1 car. This will be good on high traction surfaces but a problem on slick, low traction surfaces.

So this handles better than a car with the weight spread out over the entire chassis? I don't see how you would notice a pendulum effect in the corners, but in the air over jumps, yes. By having all of the weight in the center of the car it will seesaw in the air. Ever see an X6 conversion? Did you notice how big the wing is, almost looks cartoonish. I do like the fact that the motors aren't exposed.

Do you even have to worry about the rear of the car sliding out on a high traction track?

No, but you do have to worry about grip roll. The momentum has to go somewhere.
