do you have to use NEW parts or can you simply clean what you have and rebuild? I haven't run mine a lot but I have the afternoon free and figured I would clean it up a bit if possible...

when cleaning things, do you need a special type rag that doesnt leave lint and stuff or just clean it real good with paper towels?

You don't have to use new parts. Most people do because they are either rebuilding to keep it like new, or something is busted.

I rebuild mine from time to time just because I like wrenching

If you are re-using all of the same parts, keep the plates in the same order you took them off the car, that way you should definitely have no issues when it goes back together.

Also, make sure you have black grease and diff lube on hand. Of course

All I do when I take apart the diff is take all parts out, clean them with either namptha or motor spray, then coat each ball a little bit with grease. Install the balls in the gear, and put a layer or grease over the balls on each side. Then do a layer on the thrust on each side. Remember to clean off the thrust bearing as once I put too much AE black greas eon the thrust, my diff was gritty, and when I opeaned it, it was ALL black! You flip the rings if they look worn, but then you have to rebreak them in, [see bfastrc thread for how to break in a diff].
