You can get a brand new duratrax raze 1/8th scale buggy rtr for 300$ or less depending on where you get it.

I would highly recommend that go to your local hobby store and see what they stock. Part and tech support is crucial for a first time nitro RC'er.

How fast....every n00bs first question of course. Trust me when I say this, ANY nitro RC is fast enough for a first time driver (unless its a complete POS like those $100 cars on Ebay). They will all do over 35mph, which is more than enough speed to break parts when you hit something solid, which also will happen for sure. Just look for the highest quality most durable car you can get, those 2 thing are a lot more important than pure speed. Also please goto your local hobby shop (that is assuming you have one of course) and see what they stock. Waiting for parts from an online shop every time you need something really is torture.

Anyway, welcome! Also please check and see if there is a race track in your area, racing is by far the most fun you can have with these little cars!

Basically as stated before , go to your LHS and see what the stock . Then go from there. Also stated before DO NOT get anything from duratrax ! Stick to your RTR's from Ofna, Jammin, Kyosho, or the Sport works Turmoil.

ill say this again because i feel it is necessary. i went in to get my first rc a while back and had my mind set on the hpi nrs4 and everything. but got talked into the tc3 rtr. they will be able to get you what you are looking for and what their shop can support. just looking here for the fastest buggy at the cheapest price is not the correct approach.

Agreed with everyone here about the speed thing. Honestly, speed is really not a big deal with 1/8 scale RTRs. If you are really that obsessed with flat out straight line speed, get a dragster or some sedan setup with a big block engine (I think CEN makes one that will do 73MPH)

For the price range you listed, you are pretty limited, you have to remember you still have support equipment to buy as well and fuel isn't cheap either.

If you have a LHS, see what they carry. They will be more willing to help you out if you buy from them versus if you order online and ask them for help as you are giving them business.

The buggy I have here that I am going to run when the weather is better is the CEN Matrix and it comes in a pretty nice RTR configuration. Only thing I wish it had was a rotostart out of the box, but, for what it is, and its race quaility heritage, its a great buggy.

You may want to look into something else with your current price limitations.
