how bout getting a cheap brushless system for practice. you can run that thing all day long weeks on end and never touch it. one time investment. then come race day just slap your brushed back in.

and i have to agree if you don't want to spend stay outta 1/8th. i spend around 100-200 a week easy. seems you always need something!
