I think events like this are on exactly the right track. A large part of my living is supporting events like this (I'm a video engineer).
I work PLENTY of events that are boring to the layperson - yet 10's of thousands of people attend. It becomes interesting when the audience understands what is going on. Professional announcing is HUGE towards this ends.
I think the pits have definite viseral interest to an audience. How do you put the audience in unsafe controlled areas- thats what I do for a living.
