are you 100% that the motor is ok? I have a setup with 4 "AA" NIMH's wired together in series to break motors in (when i ran brushed motors) and also test for things like this. Make sure it actually works with direct power as it might end up busting up your ESC if its shorting or hung up.

Make sure you plugged in you ESC plug into the receivers throttle channel and the polarity is correct. Also, make sure to have the drive wheels off the ground when you turn it on as it might take off. Perform the transmitter setup as described in your escs manual.

If the motor turns under direct power, check ESC.When you apply throttle does L.E.D. in ESC change colors or flicker? If yes ESC may be bad, if no signal wire is not getting signal from receiver. Also check steering servo in throttle slot to make sure radio's end point adjustments are not turned down.

Is this a new motor? Does the motor run under direct power? It is possible that some dirt has made one of the brushes stick and not making contact with the comm of the motor if the motor has been used before. You would need to take it apart and throughly clean the motor using motor spray.
