Default 1/8th scale buggy brushless motor/esc recommendations?

hi all. i've got a new losi 8ight coming in the next day or two, so i'm good for nitro. the problem is, what to do with the old 1/8th buggy. thought about selling on ebay or something, then again the thought of converting it to battery power is pretty cool too, so, i'm thinking about converting one of my old 1/8th buggys (a jammin') to brushless and i'm looking for guidence for brushless motor/esc recommendations. any advice as to which brushless set-up/brands to use? i'll also need a motor mount from somewhere...any recommendations there? thanks.

I just contacted Fine Design yesterday asking that same question. They stock a motor mount for the Jammin and also sell a complete turnkey package with mount, motor, ESC and battery.

might be of interest.

mostly geared towards converted monster trucks... but the motors and ESC's should work just fine.

Please post pics and price of the Finedesign motor mount. They don't show it on their site. I would love to see it.

IMO, don't bother with FD unless they have a good deal on a critical piece like that. Do the conversion yourself as much as you can.

I have a nice 777 and will be doing a Jammin or Losi soon.

I can highly recomend running the same motor/esc setup I'm using... it's working awesome.

ESC: Mamba Max with a Ubec.
MOTOR: Neu 1512 1.5Y
BATTERY: (2) Maxamps 7.4V 6000mah packs in series (14.8V)
gear it about 14/46 to 16/46 for racing

GlassDoctor,
I like that setup. I didn't realize Mamba had an ESC that size and the price sure is right. I think FD has a lot of things that they don't list on their site. You have to call them and tell them what you're looking for. I asked about electric motor mounts for a Jammin and an MBX5 and they said they have both in stock.

i emailed them and asked the motor mount question myself. fine design told me that they had a motor mount for the jammin'. it's listed under...

Cars/Truggys/Trucks.....then click Losi (they said it's for the LST conversion).

then scroll down untill you find "FDM Alum. motor Clamp mounts". they have them for $32.00 a pair.

from surfing around their site, it looks like they use the same motor mounts on all of their stuff/conversions. it looks pretty sturdy, but i'm not sure if it's adjustable or not in case you want to run a different pinion.

glassdoc.....i've never heard of neu motors before. i did a little research on the web and found several suppliers for them. you list yours as a model number 1512/1.5Y, but i haven't been able to find a neu motor with that number.....only the 1515/1.5Y (for around 260 bucks). it's the only one i could find with the 1.5Y designator on the product description/number. i'm i looking at the right thing here? btw....what did you pay for your motor? the 1512's listed for around 225 and the 1515's listed for around 260. does that sound about right to you?

btw....the mamba max i found listed for around 160 or so for just the esc.......that price wasn't so bad.

Best price, and best place by far to buy from, for the Neu motors is from Mike at www.rc-monster.com

He has the motors and he knows what you are doing with them. Anyone else selling them will be helicopter/plane shops... they won't know jack about anything. These motors can be hard to get because they are low production/high end pieces. They are the best motors you can buy.

They have the finned cans at $225 for the 1512 and $280 for the 1515. That's what I paid.

If you find a 1515 for $260 that's a good deal.... the finned cans are normally $20 extra. But Mike doesn't charge extra for the finned.

Here's the motor sizes etc. http://www.neumotors.com/neu1500.html

I have the 1512 1.5y but I would recomend the 2.5d also... almost the same motor, just a little higher rpm. The 2000kv is just about right for 4s lipos.

You can get the Mamba Max esc for $135 or less.

Ubec is a voltage converter (battery eliminator circuit)... you can also use a rx pack. The point is not to use the Mamba's buit-in bec with these setups... 4s lipos.

You don't need to go to finedesign to do a bl conversion.... in fact if you do, it handicaps what you can use, etc

If you do it yourself you have control over how it's set up etc and you can spend your money on better electrics instead.

glassdoctor,

What are you using for a motor mount in the way of material and thickness?
