Default Kyosho axles in Mugen Bulldog

Guys,
I have a Mugen bulldog and I have broken an axle. I cannot get a replacement but have found that most Tamiya and Kyosho have the same diameter. I bought a Kyosho axle, part number ot17, it has no hole for the drive pin to key onto the rim. Before I drill a hole and possibly weaken the axle I was wondering if anyone can tell me how the rim and axle are splined together?

Early kyoshos used a hex hub that kinda pressed onto the axle when you tighten the rim down.
