Default Novak Brushless Overheating

I have a Kyosho ZX-5 with the Carbon Works conversion, Novak 5.5 and 7.5 brushless. I am running 78/16,17,18 sput/pinion combo. I race in the Houston, TX area. Go to www.kmrcraceway.com for pics of the track. Ambient temps is around 90-100 every summer Saturday (raceday). I seem to thermal almost every race. When I pull it from the track the esc is 180-190 and the motor is 160-180. Last night the fan on the esc came apart. I didn't have a new one so I just removed it. 3 minutes into the main I thermaled again. The motor was 130 and the esc was 190. Also, the ZX-5 body does not have alot of room under it so I modifies a BJ4 body and cut all of the vents out in it. I have also tried another GTB esc. Any suggestions? I really don't want to swith to LRP but I don't hear about overheating with them.
Thanks in advance.

Would suggest to never run it with out the fan...

By what you told , it seems you are running to big of a pinion ...

Thats why the ESC is so hot ....

The replacement fan for the novak is a bit more robust although it is taller then the stock fan. I found that if you mount the ESC so that the heatsink fins are pointing from the front to the back of the car you can tape down the fan onto the chasis in front of the ESC about a half-inch away and it will cool, although not as well as if you attached it direct to the ESC heatsink.

This is the fan:

Castle Creations just released the Mamba Max which they are claiming has an insane tolerance for heat. The availability is low atm but you should be able to pick one up within the month.

iluminati...I modified a BJ4 body. I have plenty of room for a taller fan. Thanks, I will get the replacement fan.

does your car stop totally or does it slows to a crawl as if the battery pack has dumped?

Never run without the fan. That's just asking for a problem .

Change up your gearing, check for binding in the driveline (diffs...belts...shafts).

that, i guess is thermaling. my system was crawling, which is due to a faulty temp sensor in the esc.

Drop your pinion to a 15. When running a 16 on my ZX-5 (with the 5.5) I would thermal without the FAN in just under 5 min. I went to a 15T pinion, and replaced the fan, and I am coming off at 130 on the esc.

Iluminati- I bought a 2 pack of these fans. The holes don't line up, so I used oversized screws and used only 2 screws. Novak #5652 is the direct replacement fan for the GTB. This one works. Thanks.

jsmax- SPOT ON!!! dropped to a 15 pinion and came off at 130 after 8 minutes. I thermalled in the main because like a duphus I put the capacitor next to the motor. Speedo was still only 130. Thanks alot.

I run GTB 6.5s in 2wd and Stadium Truck and have never thermalled unless I was gearing too high(once I geared up 4 teeth in the buggy to see what it would run like). I have never run the fans.

anyone know the dimensions of the novak fan?

i was told to replace it with the MuchMore fan. The MM fan has 2 sizes. either 25mm x25mm or 30x30mm. Was wondering which one would fit.

cheers

I don't have one at the moment, so I may be wrong, but if you click on the link that illuminati provided further up the page, it has a pic of the novak replacement which is 25*25*10, not 30*30

yes in fact I am wrong hehe..
