Backyard off-road track

Somewhat on-topic: has anyone gotten a ton of practice on your own track only to have a friend stop by and blow your lap record away resulting in spending a lot more than planned on RC upgrades?
New wheels and tires, new motor, transmitter upgrade, and more shock fluid options on the way here...

He offered to let me take a few laps with his ET410 but I just wanted to convince myself it was the tires :P The track was slightly damp for the first time (it's been dry around here all summer) so the increase in traction made for a pushy car. Hoping new front tires (and maybe a few suspension tweaks) will fix that!
I'd like to think we can both drive, though most of our experience comes in real cars (brother-in-law is a past SCCA National champion, I just have a bunch of podiums). The real problem is: now I can't change the track configuration until I beat his time!

New to the thread, just finished reading from beginning to end. Some very impressive work out there! I built a mini track earlier this year around April or so due to my being stuck at home and there not being any local tracks around. I had a Mini-T 2.0 anniversary edition that I had purchased to run around in the basement, but it was way too quick to be run indoors, so building my own track was the only option. Since that time I have gotten an Associated Reflex 14T, found a brand new Mini 8ight with a bad motor and built it up with some upgrades, and finally purchased the LC EMB1 1/14 buggy kit and built that up as well. The mini stuff has been a blast, and having grown up racing motocross I really only get so much enjoyment out of bashing around. Hammering laps and trying to be faster, more consistent, and building my skill level up is really what keeps me going.
My track started as dirt (jumps filled with branches, small logs, rocks, etc.), but for the minis I just couldn't get a smooth enough surface. After bouncing around for a while (literally) I bought out all of the cheap carpet that I could at two different Lowes, a bit of wood, used a 10 year old launch ramp and scraps from around the house, and came out with the final product. Lap times are between 8.5-11 seconds depending on how well I'm running.
Recently I found a track on the other side of the state (just shy of 2 hours from me) that runs races a few times a year. I've always wanted a race kit and this was enough for me to pull the trigger on a TLR 22X-4. While winter is about to set in here, now that I have the buggy built and ready to go I am going to start my petition with the "boss" to take over a portion of the back yard to make a 1/10 scale track next year. This thread has been super helpful for ideas on how to go about this (grass vs. dirt, track borders, etc.) and I'm hoping that next spring I can put something in to practice in between race days. Hoping to go full dirt to get as much quality experience practicing for racing on a track that is all dirt. Looks like I'm still sub-10-posts so I can't upload photos yet, but I will as soon as I reach that number and thank you all again for the great thread!

I'm very frustrated about not being able to like some posts. For the record I like all the track photos.
bad andy: it looks like a small depression right by the crooked branch. I like it when the vehicles start making or accentuating holes in the track, making it theirs in a sense.

Finally got the 10 posts, here are a few pictures of my mini track. Really hope to make a 10th scale backyard next year but for now this works!

@backyardRC - that is a natural depression, kind of. I pulled a clump of old rusted metal fencing outta there, leaving the depression. It adds a touch of "be careful!" if you're trying to gas that sweeper after the straight. But I've observed it fill with water during heavy rains so if becomes a drainage issue I'll fill it.
@harry I'm jealous of that space and the heavy equipment. Sweet.
